I like everything he does, but if ever there was the funniest song that I adore especially as loud as I can get it...That award goes to "Dance on." razz

i love it cuz it was my first ever Prince album (when I was 10 years old), and it was like hearing music for the first time, properly done. I will always have a special place for that album for that reason, but there are many others just as great. Its a good album to listen to from start to end, but I usually just pick out a few tracks.

"the reason why my voice is so clear is there is no smack in my veins...Understand!" Genius!

BTW: there is nothing wrong with you if you don't rate this album, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Sounds like a real man to me...mind if I turn on the radio?

As far as late 80s Prince albums goes, "Lovesexy" is one of the best. After three albums of Prince straying as far away from his old self as possible such as....Prince getting all artsy/fartsy and trying to be The Beatles on "Around The World In A Day".....Prince losing his mind even more and making stuffy classical elevator music on "Parade".....and Prince continuing on his retro 60s/70s trip on "Sign O The Times"....I was just about sick and disgusted with Prince during those years.

I guess the reason I wasn't disappointed with "Lovesexy" like I was with the previous three albums, is because I finally realized that Prince was never going to wake up, snap out of his artsy/fartsy ass phase, and return to his old self. It was the first album I bought since "Purple Rain" not expecting to find any freezing cold hard ass Minneapolis sounding jams. Therefore, I listened to it with more open ears than the previous three albums that I listened to pissed off with the type of content.

I just don't understand. disbelief Why is it that you guys only favor one type and genre of music? Ain't music supposed to express different sets and variety of moods, aspects, and emotions? Dat Phonk is "The Shit", indeed. But, there's more to life. Albeit, if that's your thing, I'm not mad at you. If you're going to stick to one thing, "Funk" wouldn't be a bad way to go. Still, though.....

Oh, funk is what I've always stuck with. I was heavy into Prince long before "Purple Rain" and was into his cold funk jams such as "Head", "Let's Work", "D.M.S.R.", "Erotic City", "Sexy Dancer", "Controversy", etc. Those songs were all modern sounding for that day and time.

Prince continued on with funk after he changed his style but it was no longer the modern sounding funk of the 1980s. He had funk jams like "Housequake" (great song) but it sounded like something that came from the 1970s and the 1970s were over. Retro funk jams were more to be considered "art" than something that is just pumped all over the dance floors. When you are a teenager, as I was in the 1980s, you sure as hell don't want to be caught dead listening to "art". You want the jams that are totally "what's happening" at the time. Prince had delivered that very well from 1978-1984.

It love this album!! To me it sounds like a mix of many colours. It´s so full of ideas.

A very famous austria Jazz guitarplayer (Wolfgang Muthspiel, a wonderful guitarplayer) once said: He loves this album, it´s a real masterpiece.
"Prince uses in one song so many ideas that other artist use in their whole career"!

And this is the same opinion like mine. razz

Did you see the tour video.
If you didn't. Watch that first and then make up your mind OK?

Today I like that album very much. When it came out I was a little disappointed (I was, of course, comparing it to SOTT), and I liked the black album much more. But when I saw the Live Show... Wow! I believe it was quite better than the SOTT Tour and his best live tour before the setting up of the current band, which is probably the best he ever had.

Some european TVs boradcasted live the Livesexy Dortmund concert and the following day many friends told me "now I understand why you like his music so much"
The concert was then published in two vhs by polygram.

To the original poster, I don't get all the fuss about Lovesexy either. It's definitely a good album, but I would rank it as my least favorite of his 80's albums.

Don't give up on Lovesexy. When I was just getting serious about Prince, I saw Lovesexy at a used CD store and my then boyfriend was like, "Get it, you'll really like it." I only recognized Alphabet St. from the track list, but I bought it anyway.

Over the next week or so I played it every morning while getting ready for work, but because it was one track I'd only hear the same songs--through Dance On. Honestly, I wasn't really feeling it--it went back on the shelf and I probably didn't listen to it again for a couple years.

Somewhere along the way I started hanging out here and everyone was always talking about how they loved it, or how "this song" or "that song" was underrated, or how amazing the concert video was. So I pulled out the cd again and made myself listen to the whole thing. Still wasn't love, but some songs were growing on me.

I sought out a video of the Lovesexy concert...and fell in love with the extended version of eye Wish U Heaven, the Blue Angel and the Lovesexy band. cloud9 Everytime I would see a thread here about the album or when someone would say something like, "I love the bass on this song" I would hmmm and go listen again because I hadn't noticed the little things.

I don't know how it happened, but one day I was listening to the cd and it all just clicked. It is the most beautiful album--I listen to it at least once a week, especially if I am in a bad or sad mood, it's very calming to me (the same feeling I get when I go to a museum). I think Lovesexy is Prince's last great concept album. The songs tell a story and the cover is the perfect visual counterpart to the concept of the music. Even now when I listen to it I always hear/notice something new--there are so many layers to the music and the lyrics and the different voices he uses. I am not a religious person, and wouldn't even describe myself as spiritual, but the love god stuff doesn't bother me at all because he has perfectly melded it with sexuality--lovesexy.

I do think the concept is clearer if you have seen the concert because you can really understand that Prince was struggling with this (very universal) idea of good and evil. That would be the main flaw for me...I love art and a great work of art should be able to stand alone--meaning you don't need to see other works by the artist to "get it." But with Lovesexy, knowing the background of why the Black Album was pulled and seeing the concert is almost necessary to complete the concept.

And if you have read all this and haven't realized, Lovesexy is now one of my favorite albums...it's probably #1. mushy (And the Lovesexy band is so kick ass I can hardly stand it! biggrin ) Not saying you have to love it or it has to be your favorite, but as someone who didn't really like it at first either, just don't give up. yes

confuse I'm pretty sure Prince is the one singing that part. Unless Cat is wearing a strap-on she's not going to be swiveling in anyone's loveseat. wink
