the entire exodus album has a distinctly new jack swing-ish tone, though it's more new jack swing-tinged funk.
though prince gets a lot of shit for this period, to his credit he often brought his own style and a bit of originality when he co-opted new jack swing and hip hop. usually bits of other genres were mixed in brilliantly, like sacrifice of victor (gospel) and gett off (hard funk) and love 2 the 9s (jazz), producing stuff that didnt really sound like any of the younger contemporaries he was being influenced by. of course there was stuff like the flow and the continental which was hot garbage, and by the time emancipation rolled around he was just churning out generic soulless shit that boyz II men would have rejected as b-side material (not to mention new jack swing being already dated by late 1996 anyway) [Edited 8/6/07 17:18pm]

and like previously stated, Acknowledge Me First of all, I'd like to preface my comment by sayin' I never felt Prince embraced the New Jack Swing sound. I"m sure, with his innate desire to distance himself from anyone else' style (except Brown & Hendrix), I can't think of any Teddy Riley classic or other 88-93' NJS song that shared any resemblance to Prince. Thekidsgirl lost me with Pheremone which was more House/techno, but she did have a possible point with Acknowledge Me, which could be a potential parellel to Wrecks N Effect's New Jack Swing hit from 1990. But it was Teddy Riley alone who was responsible for my losing touch with Prince (temporarily of course) from 88'-90'. While T.R. was tantalizing us with the New Jack sounds of Guy, Red Head and King Pin, Today, Kool Moe Dee, Al Be Sure, Keith Sweat, Boy George, James Ingram, Michael Jackson's Dangerous, "and my man, Bobby Brown," Prince was releasing music I honestly, at the time, was not feeling: LoveSexy 88' and Batman, 89'. Now, I will admit, I gave NJS a break when I heard Prince and the Time were gonna reunite for a Purple Rain sequal (Graffitti Bridge, 90'), but after the movie bombed, I ventured back into NJS. It's like Teddy Riley knew just when to come into my paisley music world to keep me occupied until Prince got his shit together (he finally did with the Symbol 92' & Gold Experience, 95'). I'm not sure what motivated the originator to start this convo string since I find no correlation between Prince and New jack Swing, which are two sounds that shaped my musical past.
