Personalized Prince discs (part 2)

When the new org first opened, my brother and I were posting tracklists for personalized Prince discs. I always think it's fascinating to see how other people compile things. Being a self-professed master at the mix tape/disc, I want to share my current project. Ian and I think that the Hits/B-Sides is good but severely lacking. So we made a Hits 3/4 and best of ballads discs from the same era. I'll start with our ballads discs-

Disc 1: The Ballads of Dorothy Parker (this one centers around the trippy, emotional and spiritual songs)

1. The Beautiful Ones
2. Free
3. Venus de Milo
4. When We're Dancing Close and Slow
5. Sometimes It Snows In April
6. Condition of the Heart
7. Starfish and Coffee
8. Under the Cherry Moon
9. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
10. Joy In Repetition
11. Question of U
12. Still Would Stand All Time
13. The Ladder
14. The Cross
15. Anna Stesia
16. And God Created Woman
17. Forever In My Life

Disc 2: The R+B Christmas Gifts (it seemed like for several years Prince was putting out a kick-ass r+b ballad right before the holidays so we took to calling these songs the above title)

"The R&B Christmas Gifts"

1. Love Song
2. When 2 R in Love
3. Scandalous
4. Insatiable
5. Damn U
6. Slow Love
7. Adore
8. International Lover
9. Do Me, Baby
10. Gotta Broken Heart Again
11. Still Waiting
12. Sweet Baby
13. Strollin'
14. For You
15. Blue Light
16. The Morning Papers
17. Money Don't Matter 2 Night
18. The Arms of Orion
19. It's Gonna Be Lonely

We always try to get the flow of the songs just so, cuz they have to be listenable, right? Who wants to hear a jarring transition? LOL Anyway, post your tracklists and clever ideas here and tell me what you think of these discs as well. I'll have s'more for y'all later.

THE BALLAD BLIZZARD

Adore
The Beautiful Ones
Crucial
Do Me Baby
Forever In My Life
How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore
If I Was Your Girlfriend
Let's Have A Baby
Old Friends 4 Sale
The One
One Nite Alone
Intro To Power Fantastic
Power Fantastic
Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)
Sometimes It Snows In April
Under The Cherry Moon

This I recorded in alphabetical order cuz it works zo well with the Tori Amos and Bjork MD's I have, BUT.
Some things do not work very well. Crucial feels silly between these better songs, so I probably take it off. Also I miss normal entries like Venus De Milo.
This was actually my first MD, so it is 75 minutes, not the 80 minute discs I use now.
Never will you see D&P or Nothing Compares on any of my Ballad Blizzards cuz they SUCk compared to these songs. Lots of them personal faves.

Songs 4 Sundays

Anna Stesia
The Cross
Elephants And Flowers
Free
Crystal Ball
4 The Tears In Your Eyes
The Future
God
The Ladder
Paisley Park
A Place In Heaven
Positivity
The Question Of U
Sign "O" The Times
Still Would Stand All Time

Not happy with this one at all; the ABC thing does not work, so I need to re-track it. I do not have God Instrumental, or I would have used it. Also; Free is not my fave at all...

Poplife

Strange Relationship
17 Days
Do It All Night
Paisley Park
I Wish U Heaven
Dolphin
Do U Lie?
The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
Shy
Take Me With U
Last Heart
Around The World In A Day
Starfish And Coffee
She's Always In My Hair
Raspberry Beret
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
Baby Knows
Poplife
When You Were Mine

Here, I got rid off the ABC thing and it works waaay better.
Some work, others don't. Shy had to be toned down, cuz lots of new work is mastered too loud. irritating.
Strange... is nr one cuz it sounds great remastered. I just love to pump it outa my stereo.
Great to see how lyrical content mixed with a great sounding melodies forces songs on this MD that I would normally not listen to, like Beret and personal faves like Do U Lie? fit in perfectly.
Dunno about Baby Knows, though....think about removing it.

im sorry bu I think the endings and the beginnings of ur cd's are a little off. I may sound like an asshole but Love Song would never come first. It would have 2 be edited very much.

For You (plainly an intro or "beginning")
Scandelous
Insatiable
Blue Light
Love Song
Gotta Broken Heart Again

...whatever songs...then in the end should come..

When 2 R In Love
Do Me, Baby
Adore (plainly the ending of every song EVER)

for ur 3rd CD I like Forever In My Life being the ending...kind of a quiet ending, the live Sign O The Times version would be good 2. The beginning would go..

Starfish & Coffee
Under The Cherry Moon (follows tradition of Slow Love)
maybe The Cross, but it still sounds off...
Ballad Of Dorthy Parker
Question Of U
Joy In Repitition

whtever songs...

Free
The Ladder
Anna Steisa
Forever In My Life

but the 3rd CD was cool though

I always believe beginnings and endings are most important of all albums. would Rainbow Children sound right with Digital Garden at the end? I'd think the album would lose some of my points

ok been talking 2 long...
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

nice, but what do U do about the different sound quality of the CDs?

e.g. the SOTT CD´s sound is much lower than newer albums. When playing SOTT I have 2 crank my stereo up , while with Gold I have 2 lower it down.

Try ripping your discs to MP3 format (or import them as loss-less .wav files) into a music player on your computer. On a Mac, iTunes will automatically or manually let you adjust volumes for individual tracks, and that amplification carries over when you burn discs out of iTunes. So, your low-volume SOTT tracks (that album sounds like complete CRAP, btw, volume-wise) are equal volume as all your others.

p.s. Macs rock!

Cool -- iTunes 3 works best, but it requires that you have Jaguar. If you're still using OS 9, make sure you're using the most recent version of iTunes (it's version 2.somethingorother).

I use iTunes 3 to adjust the volume for my entire catalog of music, ensuring that when I shuffle my entire collection to play at home or work, I don't get blown out by some songs and strain to hear others.

Thanks for your input paisleypark4. But I like them how I have them. Love Song made sense at the beginning of the disc cuz it's kindof a thesis for the rest of the songs that follow. It says what the disc is about. I agree, For You is a bit strange in the middle but I don't like opening tracks of albums to be the opening tracks of compilations. I like to switch up the order to see what different juxtapositions do to the songs. Maybe I'll just take it out of there. Or stick it more in the middle as an interlude/intermission type thing. C'Mon people, list some of your mix discs!

Also; editing the songs on a MD player also helps.
Boost the SOTT tracks up, scale TGE songs down and you have a kewl thang.

That MD was created through songwriter craftsmanship. Listen to the lyrics; they all have sumthing in common, most tell a story or have lines I am jealous of.
But also the melody; a song has to stick in your mind. The melody of Raspberry Beret in combination with the lyrics prove sublime.
Baby Knows and Around The World In A Day might go though. They seem the od ones out. Or do not work very well.

Okay Baby Knows IS out, but I just like the fact that ATWIAD album gave up four songs...
