RD, you talk about how good TRC is all the time. Sounds more like you're trying to convince yourself it's a great album.

I have to agree with RD here. Rainbow Children is a great album, I can't understand people here who don't like it. Its the best thing he's done in years.
Having said that, he lets himself down by then mentioning Invincible. Now there is some shit. If anything, that rubbish is over-rated. Never heard anything so turgid. IMO -----------------------------------------

...will be out of print for 4-9 years and will hopefully be considered the all time musical low point of Princes career. However it will resurface as the album that was played at Prince`s next wedding. You know the one where he married Larry Graham.

No album without hit singles is considered classic by its detractors. I still love the album but I doubt it will have that impact in 5-10 years time with its detractors. It will remain a fan's favourite but not a classic.

oh yeah, lets not forget. The album didn't do well on Your Musical Bible did it? Ooops I mean BillBoard Charts. I've seem to have forgotten that; It can only be good or great if it has the following things...
High BillBoard Charting Heavy radio play Hit singles It must battle with the #1 spot on the charts, with Britney or NSYNC It should have heavy marketing; T-Shirts, Pepsi ads and Breakfast Cereal. Without those things, it cannot be good music, right...? Sarcasm is bliss... WAKE UP! Blue Blue

RD, you talk about how good TRC is all the time. Sounds more like you're trying to convince yourself it's a great album. No way..I barely have even mentioned TRC in months. As God is my witness Im not trying to convince myself...I already know its great. Look at the ONA tour, the reviews, the audience reaction to the tour etc. It sint like I said NPS. Ex-Moderator | TRC will never be considered a classic by the population at large.
"The Rainbow who? Is that a gay thing?" It could, at best, grow on the fans that aren't really into it now. And maybe get some praise from jazz lovers. I agree that musically, it's fabulous, funky, fun. Lyrically, it makes me want to vomit. If I could just tune out the words, I might be able to listen to it. But I can't. So I can never truly dig this album. |

IMO Nah--if u go back and listen to some Invincible cuts without thinking of the media bullshit that happened with it, there's some very good singing and good material there. I guess overall what I mean, is that after alll the fanfare has died down and the "controversy' over the lyrics and new music is released, some folks are gonna put on TRC and say "damn..this isnt too bad afte r all..I let my con stance judge the music instead of being objective" "Climb in my fur."

IstenSzek said: It will turn into somewhat of a cult album in the future.
Which is a status I'm sure it deserves. You just know that if he would ever get back into the mainstream market and score a string of top 10 hits, there would be articles and articles, reviewing the so called "lesser" period of Prince's career. Critics reviewing so called "gems" from obscure albums released between 93 and, say 2003. Has nothing to do with major write-ups going back , rediscovering the past..it's a personal going back to a record that you didnt appreciate at first release. Im not saying that lyrics overall will be more accepted..Im talking about the music and overall cd. It is sort of like a reverse Black Album...at first it was heralded as the "gotta have" thing...then after its been released, knuckleheads dog it etc. Who knows, perhaps we'll have even witnessed the actual
second coming and we'll all just LOVE the lyrics to TRC. Or perhaps I should lay off the blue and yellow pills. Well Prince talked about the second coming MORE-SO with classic albums of the eighties. "Climb in my fur."

It isnt about the population at large..its about people who literally have blinders on who dont like it at tis point in time It could, at best, grow on the fans that aren't really into it now.
And that is the whole point I was making...and what I think will happen. I agree that musically, it's fabulous, funky, fun. Lyrically, it makes me want to vomit. If I could just tune out the words, I might be able to listen to it. But I can't. So I can never truly dig this album.
This really is a phenomenon to me...even the detractors "know" that the music is great (but wont admit it) but use the lyrics as an excuse for hating it etc...as if half of the stuff you listen to does not have dubious lyrics. Why is Prince held up to a higher standard...becasue of ther exclusion part?..because of the woman as second class citizen part etc?...pffft. What about his past music that seemingly, if you want to go there, could be looked at as exploitive to women and exclusatory to others who werent down with the "open hedonisim" of Uptown? No disease clinics or vd shots for some of the audience ya know? As if other lyrics that Prince fans listen to on a daily basis by other artists are not worse than TRC's lyric in the grand scheme of things. Odd. "Climb in my fur."

As you age your musical taste changes, progresses or develops. I don't think everyone is quite there yet, myself included. I have yet to break into all of the Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Coltrane that I've been itching to. Blue Blue

Why is it that every thread about TRC ends up with the same lines about "no commercial success BUT...". Can't you find another aspect to talk about ?

All I know is that I have NEVER adressed the issue of commercial success being any ways relevant...ever.Here or on amp and if anyone can find where I did Ill send you 50 bucks. However when it is brought up by others, its only to cover themselves and their ignorance towrds music itself..its like a smokescreen that they hide behind because they know their argument in whats truly good work, holds no weight. So its a last, tried and true( ha!) last resort. "Climb in my fur."

As if other lyrics that Prince fans listen to on a daily basis by other artists are not worse than TRC's lyric in the grand scheme of things. Odd. Apparently I misunderstood your original statements. My bad. We all agree it will never have commercial success. And who really cares about that anyway? Do I consider myself a detractor? If you mean do I not *like* the album, then yeah. I absoultely admit that musically, it's one of his best albums to date. But I can praise it's musical genius and still not want to listen to it again. It's just not my thing. I can appreciate a painting for it's artistry, talent of the artist, use of color, etc, and still not want to hang it in my living room. For me, and I'm only speaking for me, I just don't feel the lyrics. It's just not happening. It ruins something in it for me. This isn't the only venture of his where I feel that way. As a whole, I don't think Prince is a great lyricist. There are plenty of his songs I can't listen to, based on that alone. (Man O War is the only one that pops into mind right now. How lame is that song!?! Yet musically, pretty cool.) Not to say he doesn't have his shining moments with words either. What I don't feel in this album, is precisely the whole religious thing, the theocratic order and etc. And before you say he's always been this way, let me say there's a distinct difference between singing about God and spirituality than you're own religion, and the rules as such. I just can't relate to it. And find some of it downright offensive. On the other hand, erotic, sexy, and downright dirty music has never offended me. U didn't get Man O War...One of the last songs I would think of, when it comes to bad lyrics... The first song that comes to my mind by Prince is..Cloreen Bacon Skin. Even that song is humorous to me...
I think Man O War, is a good song with a good story behind it, somethin we can 'all' relate to. No offense to anybody, but I think alot of orgers (as ironic as this may sound) lack a sense of humor. Gets a lil uptight in here sometimes... Majority of the faces appear to be like this: With a few others (including myself) that appear like this Some even Even And then there's IceNiner  :Evillol: (I'm kiddin Ice) Blue [This message was edited Mon Sep 30 20:55:49 PDT 2002 by TheBluePrince] Blue
