that wasn't a mistake,ATWIAD was the bravest thing he ever did.He was even stating "screw the charts!" back then at the height of his fame.

just because it was brave doesn't mean it wasn't a mistake.

i don't think it was, but the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Every time I tell someone I like Prince, everybody says "yea I like dthe old stuff, before he changed his name to a symbol." It was the stupidest thing to do. Can you imagine Jimi Hendrix doing something so childish and so distracting from his music!? It was a stupid publicity stunt that changed his career forever, and I think his attitude towards his fans too.

Not answering questions from his fams.
We want 2 know. Why not answer questions from fams?
I know he like 2 keep his life private & don't like 2 talk much 2 reporters.
But, we are not all reporters. Some of us are fams.

1)prince sigh Even though I thought that he was seriously bugging out when he did this, I still heart him because 2 me he was always gonna be Prince. shrug
When he changed his name tho, everyone was like "Who does this fucking fairy think he is???" around my way & I was confused also but didnt care because after that happened, it seemed that he was even more naughtier! horny
2)Also when he started suing the fan websites (sorry), it was like Prince? eek WTF?
3)When he started doing those collabo's with old school artists disbelief The only chickie I was feeling was Chaka Khan oh & George Clinton but Prince was tryna do that Parliament Funkadelic thing and it just wasnt going down right. Prince is Prince not Funkadelic nor Parliament.shrug
4)When he began to dismiss fans off by ignoring them, not answering questions, no autographs and eventually (sorry again) suing them!!
5) WHEN HE MARRIED MAYTE...believe me, it through alotta fem's off! nod & that is the foundation of his fan's
peace & wildsign

I feel that,no matter what Prince has done to his career, his place in pop music history is secure. But here are some of the biggest career mistakes he has made,imo...

***The Name Change---This was a senseless,overly-dramatic,attention-seeking publicity stunt that failed big time.I used to laugh at the fams who actually went around referring to him as "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince".

***Wrong Singles---When I look at most of Prince's post-Purple Rain albums,I get frustrated at some of the songs that were chosen as singles. In many cases,Prince ruined the commercial success of those albums by picking the wrong singles. For example,"Girls And Boys" should have been the second single from 'Parade' instead of "Mountains"..."Housequake" should have been the second single from 'SOTT' instead of the cryptic "IIWYG".And why wasn't the song "Lovesexy" chosen as the second single instead of the bland "Glam Slam"??

***Not bringing the "SOTT" tour to the U.S.---I think it was Eric Leeds who said this in the DMSR book, about how much momentum Prince had with this album and how a tour would have made a huge difference.

***Not hiring a director for his post-Purple Rain movies

***Paisley Park Records---In 1985/86,this label showed incredible promise, with excellent albums by The Family,Mazarati and Sheila E.But as the 80s wore on,things began to slide (Dale Bozzio?? Good Question??).Prince could have been the Berry Gordy of the 80s,but this was a missed opportunity.

1)Letting the divine Mayte slip away...

2)Although I'm not a member of it, the NPGMC does seem to have been a good idea on paper and an incredibly badly executed one in reality. The same old 'if he had only used it to release songs form the vault' arguments still apply.

3)Poor choice of singles over the last decade.

4)Using out-dated prodcution techniques on 'Emancipation', which was, after all, 'the album he was born to make'. Ditto RUTJF.

1)The one thing he did wrong above all was not capitalise on TMBGITW. Here he scored a huge hit, regardless of name, but then lost momentum with Gold Experience which could and should have been a far better album.

2) Spending so much time after Grafitti Bridge trying to be the mega star he was before. Up until that point he had always led the way, but during DP and Symbol albums he seemed to be trying to be "hip" and following trends.

3)Emancipation - Its been said a million times, but had this been a tight little 12 track album, he could have scored big with it. Too much filler.

4) Not releasing some of those gems from the vault, but releasing Rave and NPS. Thankfully, he got it together for the TRC.

Easy, the whole name change thing
and acrimonious fall out with Warner Bros.

Though from an artistic point of view
those problems did prompt the most
prolific production of excellent material
since 1987.

1. The name change
2. Suing Fansites - groups
3. Larry Graham
4. Not doing interviews and better promotion
5. Not capitalizing on NPGMC
6. Closing 1-800-NewFunk (tele and stores)
7. Not having a good Business Manager
8. "Trying to be his own Business Manager"
9. Steve Fargnoli
10. Not releasing the music as promised.

My top 10 (not in any specific order). I know there's more.

This and not working with Warners to get all of his back catalogue remastered and re-issued.

And imo:

Not making a cool video (featuring a black teenager in it for example) for Pop Life
Not making a video ( instead of direct movies…) with him and Sheila for « A Love Bizarre »
Not releasing « Last Heart » and « Wonderful Ass » as singles , well the whole « Dream Factory » album, at the end of 1986 (it would have been a Christmas present/ official Revolution goodbye)
Graffiti Bridge
Maybe not to tour in the US for D &P
Carmen Electra
Not releasing Love Sign on Warner, not releasing Days of Wild as a single
Absurd non-singles choices without real promotions for Emancipation (even if I like a lot The Holy River)
Not calling « Uptown » folks to have a friendly discussion and the lawsuits
Presenting his religious beliefs (I won’t even use the word « cultish ») as « The Truth »
Not releasing « So far so pleased » as a kick ass single
Blaming the others for his own BS ( the 1992 fabulou$ contract...)

Besides the Warner fight I'll give some more things that hurt him careerwise. Not being forthcoming and cordial with the Journalists ,Photographers. Not giving Autographs or Press Junkets, fighting with MTV, Cancelling gigs and Cancelling way too many appearances such as Saturday Night Live, Mohammed Ali Special, Concerts if they didn't sell out, well he should have just moved them to a smaller venue. Getting rid of the REVOLUTION.

Closing down Fansites and making a big deal about using his photo. Not touring the USA for Sign Of the Times was a mistake also. Simply not Pushing Great songs off of albums, not making enough videos for these singles, not releasing the vault material, not releasing old videos that were shot to Fans. I ask Prince what are you waiting for? He needs to stop Teasing and Starving us for Material. He needs to kiss up and play the Hollywood Game again. Sad,but True!

Under the Cherry Moon killed his movie career. Prince ruled the pop music culture in 1984 and 1985. Prince was the biggest pop star at that time. He was as popular as Michael Jackson. Then came UTCM in 1986 ended Prince's purple reign.

Because when a performer has an Image of being very Sexual he should Play-Up that Playboy Angle and have a Bevy of Women around him. He has to give the Impression of being Available even if he isn't! Big Mistake to have the Image of a Church Going, Clean-Cut, Family Man if you are Prince. Sad,but True! Prince has got to get Dirty and get Wild again and age is something he shouldn't think about cause he Himself will put his little-ass in the Grave. It is simply called abandon all restrictions and totally let go and be Free! Prince please return to Hedonism...Everybody misses the Days of Wild and the Caligula Stage and the Assless pants. That was your Trademark and you should Insure that Ass of yours!

Along these same lines, I say:

"Letting the hype from PURPLE RAIN's
success distract him from comcentrating on
making music".

He actually believed he made a good movie! shocked

I always wish he would just concentrate
on making music and performing it, but his
head got so full of "the Glamour Life". sad
