what are your opinions on this album? It probably doesn't help that it's ten years old. It was awesome back in the day. YES. but very dated now, most of it except for Sexy MF, Sweet Baby and Damn U. Timeless! ______________________________________________

Back to the old classic and highly effective single albums of the 80s. My tracklist would be:
My Name Is Prince Sexy Mf Damn U Blue Light The Morning Papers The Continental And God Created Woman 3 Chains O Gold 7 Like Aaron, I really like some of the tracks I've left off but those included above pretty much form the bedrock of that album.

I plan on reviving the 10 song album format. I like albums that are 30-45 minutes a lot.

I've been saying this since cd's became popular. LESS IS MORE! All the classic albums from rumours to Led Zep IV and Purple Rain were much shorter than 17 songs and that is why they are great! 8-10 awesome tracks is so much better than 9 good songs and 6 fillers! ______________________________________________

I really like this cd a lot
I just don't get the fascination with 3 Chains Of Gold...yeccch Sacrifice of Victor, now that's a good track! (as is Blue Light, The Max, I Wanna Melt with You, Morning Papers, Damn You, and 7...)

Raise your hands if you like the Kirstie Alley Bits!
Raise your hands if you like "YO YO BAAAY-BEEE! Tell me where the party's at!!" Raise your hands if you like the lyric "don't look now, there's a river of blood/you must hhave been a virgin" 10 years later "Symbol" is still energetic, but dang, is it JUVINILE. The merits of "Lovesexy" and "Rainbow Children are more interesting to debate, cause P is bein' P, lyrically, and inspirationally. "symbol" catches hiim tryinng in vain to be cool and full oof attitude. *** PRINCE, after 1992's symbol album: "I dad become a little ashamed of what 'Prince' had become"...damn right, rainbow child!!

is also one of my favorite albums. You can't miss with songs like:
My Name is Prince - why didn't it go to #1 Sexy MF - too funky Love 2 the 9's - love it Morning Papers - great song Blue Light - why didn't he release this? The Max - another funk jam that should have been released, especially the summer of 93 The Continental - I love this songs Damn U - Damn such a beautiful song it's always on repeat, my favorite And God Created Woman - shonuff 3 Chains of Gold- amazing Sacrifice of Victor - tight jam The only songs I pass is Arrogance and The Flow but they aren't the worst songs ever. It's a classic. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Sorry sub, I don't think this subject is worth an individual thread. Why not "I just bought some olives and they were bad. I didn't like the bread I bought either."
But as it is already a tradition for not liking Parade, you are the person to get the plastic duck award of the week! Congratulations!

IMO Sacrifice of Victor is just about the only track that really rocks on the Symbol album.

Half and Half this one. And God Created Woman, Sacrifice of Victor, fantastic. The Max, The Continental, Three Chains Of Gold, bag of shite !
Parade kicks arse from beginning to end though !

I love both 'Symbol' and 'Parade'.
I was 16 when 'Symbol' was released and it turned me from a casual fan into a follower. I was amazed by it. I now have Prince's entire back catalouge and 'Parade' is a highlight. 'Sometimes it snows in april' is stunningly beautiful. It is one of my all-time favourite Prince songs.

It's a good album, but as many people have said
it seems a bit too long. I also think the track order is a bit strange. Kicking off with 'My Name Is Prince' is cool, but cuz it's such a full-on track it makes 'Sexy MF' & 'Love 2 The 9s' seem weak (even though they're not). It made sense when there were segues inbetween almost every track, but once they were removed Prince should've rearranged the tracklist. The album seems to stop-start instead of flowing. I suggest the following tracklist... 1. My Name Is Prince 2. The Continental 3. Damn U 4. Sexy MF 5. I Wanna Melt With U 6. Love 2 The 9's 7. The Morning Papers 8. The Max 9. Blue Light 10. The Sacrifice Of Victor 11. 7 12. And God Created Woman 13. 3 chains O' Gold [This message was edited Tue Oct 1 5:11:38 PDT 2002 by BorisFishpaw]

It's one phat and chunky monster jam whereas Sexy MF is very lean cuisine, if ya know whatta mean. Kinda like Laurel and Hardy, maybe that was the intention

The album is the reason that I became a Prince enthusiast. And come to think of it, the album was released ten years ago this month.
About the segues... I think they would have made more sense if they hadn't removed some of them. I assume this was done to make room for " Wanna Melt with U," which was a late addition to the tracklist. I don't have the CD handy, but CDNOW gives a running time of 74:12 for the album. These days it's possible to squeeze a few more minutes onto a CD... perhaps the deleted segues could be restored while still keeping everything on one disc? This could be a fun thing to do with a CD burner. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

oh, suby, if you don't like Parade, give "Mountains" another listen. Worth keeping the album for.

I know I've already said this 100 times, but the Symbol album KICKS ASS! I do not understand how anyone can't love this cd. The funk is amazing. The slow jams are great and it's full of sex and fun. However, this is also a concept album which many of you just don't get (like TRC for example). The Symbol cd is so funky and I still listen to it every week. Parade is also one of his best. I am stumped as to why you wouldn't love both.
