Many here seem to revel in his high chart position, but if he didn't do so well, you'd get defensive with all sorts of "who cares" and "Prince makes music for himself and doesn't care about the charts" comments.
I guess it's the nature of being a fan.

91,676 copies sold of an album with very little by way of promotion 91,676 copies sold of an album when albums are selling fewer and fewer copies each year due to downloads etc 91,676 copied sold of an album NOT available on iTunes I'd say that was a very decent result for Mr Nelson! Keep in mind, almost every album that is released by a major artist gets leaked before the release date and becomes available online for free. Your other points also apply more or less to other artists like Bob Dylan for example whose last album Modern Times has sold more than 2.5 million and debuted at no. 1. I know for a fact that album was available online illegally way before it came out. The only promotion it had was word of mouth and great reviews - no widely circulated videos or anything else. It's just a great album. The main reason PE didn't sell well (let's face it - 91,000 is pretty weak) is because it didn't create any buzz and this is due to the fact that it's just a weak album - the music itself is very weak. Prince fans want to rationalize and blame all sorts of factors for its weak sales but they forget that its mainly about the music. Nirvana's Nevermind sold massively on the strength of great songs, not marketing. SOngs from that bob dylan advert were in ipod/itunes adverts for a while, id say thats a fair whack of promotion "Im Too Funky To Sleep With Myself"

Prince debuts at #3 by selling 91,000+ and this is deemed great....I hope you all remember that when are slamming other artists for selling the same amounts and more!

considering this thing wasn't on itunes and the only promos i saw were cardboard cut outs taller than me, i think it did just fine.
*edit* nevermind, it's on itunes. [Edited 8/2/07 16:50pm]

I think we've been a bit spoiled by the high debuts of the previous 2. Anybody remember the late 90s and early 00s? The Rainbow Children debuted at number 108, for goodness sake! I couldn't have said it better! If you will, so will I

Anyone know what the first week sales were for 3121?

like 190,000 if my memory serves me correctly Wow, then that's a big difference from one album to the next.

The fact that he did not release a single, make a video, & do any major talk shows promoting the album..... shows you how much power he still has. Topping the chart top 5 is just as good as being #1 for him.

Well, it shows that the record industry is in such horrible shape that 90k Prince fans are enough to get it in the top 5 more than it does about anything else, I'm afraid.

The industry is horrible. If Prince did not give the cd away he would not had made such a profit. That is definitely one of the reasons why he chose to do that. The charts has always been full of crap. Prince can release another cd before the year is over & i still bet he would end up in the top 5.

Why should I lower my standards for good songwriting just because its Prince? In my books he doesn't get a free pass just because of his past accomplishments. What have you done? It's so easy for people who don't do what they judge other people on to put them down. Expectations are only yours! we expect so much from other people because of what we want them to be or what we expect from them, and that's why we are so called "let down" Prince is a MASTER AT WHAT HE DOES.... Judging him should only be left to GOD loving his work is your own responsibility Love responsibly... hate is nobody's friend! ...and is your books the book of love and instruction on life? free passes are given by GOD for your good deeds on earth. and believe me Prince has many free passes to use as he sees fit. and remember whats comes from the mouth, comes from the heart! fill your heart with God daily so more good comes from your heart. PLANET EARTH IS A GREAT ALBUM Peace love you baby but not like my guitar

True, but on todays chart, when overall you compare what promotion 3121 had versus planet earth (perfectly stated by moonbeam on this thread) it's not really that huge of a difference. Besides...I can think of bigger...*cough cough Purple Rain to ATWIAD cough*

True. But the 21 night gig makes up for it and then some. I paid $10 for the cd (well $20/gave mom one). Tix are how much and not to mention the after shows. Besides, he'll probably set up house somewhere else before a year has passed. The man is very smart. "I don't make the rules. I just play"
