prince is laughing all the way 2 the bank over PE

It has been suggested that Prince reads the forums on fan websites and I'm starting 2 belive he does somewhat. 4 a few years now, fans have been clammering 4 prince 2 stop with the jazzy instrumentations in his live shows and albums and get back 2 pop style writting. Even some have complained about his funk output and r & b stylings of the past years. And I think prince has listened 2 this cry, but not in the way u might think.

Planet Earth gives those that have wanting him 2 go back 2 a certain format and bring back Lisa and Wendy. Well this album does it and the result is...A FUCKED UP ALBUM! Prince has always been tongue in cheek in his music, his wardrobe, his personality etc. this can b a testament of his genius tho.

here he takes a album that most r claiming 2 b his worst effort ever in his illustrious career and depending on whose ear it catches, it's brilliant. this is the true power of music in how it can divide people in.

Prince is really a genious tho when it comes 2 this album in so many ways tho. He gives out a "free" album 2 those in the UK which causes Sony 2 pull it from retail. but prince still wins cause those attending the shows in UK not only get it included with the ticket price but those that got in the newspaper as well. Prince got paid from the Mail but also gets paid 4 those attending the concerts. BRILLIANT!

Verizon pays him 2 help their launching of V-cast mobile phones and they subsequently sponser him. Mo Money mo money. BRILLIANT!

He suckers Sony in2 distributing a album that won't chart that high, nor have a lasting impact on the charts. BRILLIANT!

Now the tricky part comes 2 his fans...and he's succeeded! those that wanted a rock pop album so badly now have it and the result is...A TERRIBLE ALBUM! but we've bought it...BRILLIANT!

at the end of the day, prince has never wanted restrictions on his music and now maybe he can move on 2 creating what he's always been better at...classic grooves and true funk music with the splashes of pop brilliance and the occassional rock number.

the man is pure genius in manipulations of public perception. thumbs up!
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

PE is def not his best attempt, it sounds like he put it together in 2 days...
The vocals are horribly recorded... etc...
What you're saying is making sense
cause last years 3121 fizzled after a few monthes, and he didn't really give a shit...
Now that planet earth is fizzling he's showing us that he doesn't care
he's just dishing blows to the industry...
when we thought he sold out, by going to columbia, with musicology...
Little did we know that the purple fucker was planning to screw the industry a few years later...
The man is a genuis...
The WaR is on...
Is Prince the Messiah of Music?
I won't say he is...

I think most of the vocals sound very very good; listen to PE, SHOE, FBM etc etc.. I really think that his vocals are mostly spot on, on this cd...

I dont think P is trying to "win"
He makes music like he always has..
He finds new ways to market it or deliver it to the public
He does things his way...always has...
As far as this album being terrible or fucked up...
that would better describe this thread.

james farber of the ny daily news once gave the album come 1 star out of 4, another critic from mpls gave the symbol album perhaps 2 stars..better yet film critcs gave the big chill 3/12 stars and that movie sucked 2 all hell. like the true PE (public enemy) said..who gives a damn about a goddamn critic. critics don't necessarily pay 4 the products they review, so since i am a PAYING critic, i have a right 2 say that this album is terrible.

i knew jim farber when he was a clerk in the records department of Korvettes in Yonkers. In the movie Ratatouille, one character, a food critic admits that critics are strange creatures. They do nothing creative, and are usually only successful when being negative.
Lets see how many songs Jim Farber has written

Honestly I don't think P comes to these forums and I don't think P gives a shit what anyone says bout his latest album.

Hell from the way he talks, PE is nothing more than a distant memory in the back of his mind.

Fans forget that P isn't like his fans, he doesn't spend hours upon hours deciphering lyrics looking for hidden meanings. He doesn't stare at each album cover and try to think of ways he would have changed the color, scheme, and Type.

P does what he does and moves on, if you don't dig this stuff something new is already in the oven.

Also P doesn't care if the cd sells well or not, its the concerts that pay the bills.

if that's true.....we're pretty mean. i mean, it took thread upon thread of bashing and praising, pros and cons, old prince vs. new prince, etc. before the album came out. in which case i wish he wouldn't listen to us. ever. (nothing against Planet Earth, I dig it, but some threads here were ridiculous/stuff i would never say to any person). i mean..this *is* a fan site, yet two thirds of it are criticism. sigh.

I think most of the vocals sound very very good; listen to PE, SHOE, FBM etc etc.. I really think that his vocals are mostly spot on, on this cd...

Since my Eddy Schreyer blurb was (evidently) a bit too brash for the powers that be (no complaints - a lashing out deserves a lashing back), I'll just borrow this thread to make a more rational point...

It seems that (based on the two comments above) there are certainly two valid opinions which, at face value, appear to be opposing. But what we're talking about here is performance vs production. I don't think that anyone would really deny that the man (as usual) delivers a pretty flawless performance (with the possible exception of Lion Of Judah - right w/u EmbattledWarrior!). You can pretty much expect that consistantly from him. Especially these days. However, anyone with a set of critical ears can hear that the tracks were not only mixed half-heartedly, but that several (especially the drum and vocal) were recorded either in a hurry, or by a deaf person. So what we have is a good collection of songs that are poorly produced (by previous standards). Enter Eddy Schreyer. A man who evidently has the idea that you can indeed polish a turd by compressing the ever-loving crap out of it and making every cut as hot as possible. The result is a muddled atrocity of incoherent noise.

So... The question remains - does a good collection of songs equal a good album? I say no. It's not the 1940s anymore, and this isn't backwoods hillbilly music recorded in someones garage on a summer afternoon with a tin can and a slab of wax (or whatever they used back then). The sad truth is that, despite the quality of the songs, I won't be able to listen to Planet Earth on a regular basis. It just hurts my ears too much.

james farber of the ny daily news once gave the album come 1 star out of 4, another critic from mpls gave the symbol album perhaps 2 stars..better yet film critcs gave the big chill 3/12 stars and that movie sucked 2 all hell. like the true PE (public enemy) said..who gives a damn about a goddamn critic. critics don't necessarily pay 4 the products they review, so since i am a PAYING critic, i have a right 2 say that this album is terrible.

i knew jim farber when he was a clerk in the records department of Korvettes in Yonkers. In the movie Ratatouille, one character, a food critic admits that critics are strange creatures. They do nothing creative, and are usually only successful when being negative.
Lets see how many songs Jim Farber has written

damn i remember that store in yonkers 2..i'm from white plains area

and it's not just prince's music that he does this 2
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

word? are you for real? rolling stone? that's your touchstone?

I sincerely hope I'm not as good at understanding cyber-sarcasm as I thought.

My point is that don't say it's terrible when it's not; maybe u think it's terrible but MANY others don't think so. I love it myself!!

the minute someone doesn't like something prince does all the fanatics jump up in uproar. fine u like the album and others do as well, but there are just enough if not more that don't like this album. so maybe instead of scouring through only the "positive" reviews, perhaps u should read the others that don't. it doesn't make us negative, it just proves that his music is diversified.

4 instance, the album u'r avatar is from, i love it, but not everyone does.

prince's music has always had 3 categories upon 1st listening

1. either it catches u right from the beginning

2. it takes time 2 grow and love/loate it

3. u just hate it no matter how long it takes

very true, i remember not liking TTD's 2nd album that much but revisited it years later and it's not that bad

Dig this. I like the new album. I really do. But that statement sounded like Rolling Stone is the be-all end-all of music critics. Not the case.

Hasn't been that way for years.

That all. wink
