Ireland, 1984, Prince invades

no idea where to start with this thread, but i guess the beginning would be a good place, but before i start rambling on, i would like if you would all give input of your first experiences with prince music, especially those who came from so called good religious backgrounds and other daft situations, remember Prince invented the "parent advisory sticker" etc, lol

hint: not knowing what masturbation was, and hence having no shame playing darling nikki loud for parents and neighbours to hear or having the purple rain poster on the wall, and your uncle asking "who is that nigga?", then first realising that prince is black lol

this is the sort of stuff that has brought back memories lately, of a day gone by, but what a day, a day when i finally found something i could relate to

The music we know, but the experiences behind the music are much more fascinating.....

1983-1987

i grew up in a Christian environment and often defended Prince by sharing lyrics from his more religious songs

i too blasted his music out of my house for all the neighbors to hear, not knowing half the stuff Prince was talking about -- "jack u off" was a particular favorite to dance around the house to -- i wonder what the neighbors were thinking now!

my brother used to refer to Prince as a fag tho he was totally infatuated with the women he was always associated with

i used to have a poster of Vanity over my bed -- her wearing nothing but a pink satin sheet over half her body -- i had another of apollonia wearing some kind of jungle print bathing suit -- funny how my mother seemed to let me get away with it -- i suppose she was happy that i had hetereosexual tendencies, eh

i think my father could care less about Prince; tho, he did buy me the Vanity 6 album with a prideful "that's my boy!" look on his face when the clerk rung it up for us

i got mocked a lot by friend and foe alike for always playing Prince music and my fascination with anything having to do with him and the mpls sound -- i think i only ever had one or two friends who shared a tenth of my FANatacism

i remember seeing a kid at the mall who made himself to look very much like prince -- i walked over to him and we had a good lengthy talk about all things prince-related

i used to go to this one discount store quite often where i'd buy the latest prince posters and buttons -- all very collectible now except that i don't have them anymore

i used to talk my mother into taking a trip to a nearby college town that used to stock off-the-wall vinyl albums -- things most record stores didn't sell and which you'd have to special order -- i used to cherish the things i found in that store -- i felt like one of the chosen few for having acquired these things -- early prince releases, singles, 12-inches, etc.

i remember finding another store in that same town that sold 8x10s of celebrities -- i found a couple of prince from the days of dirty mind -- great stuff

i got prince's managers number and called their office every 3-6 months asking about the next release, next single, tour, etc. the people there were always very nice to me and actually took the time to answer my questions

i wrote to vanity -- she sent me a signed 8x10 and wrote a letter to me on the back

i wrote to tyka -- she sent me a personally signed by 8x10 in an envelope that said "your #1 mpls fan" and she enclosed a full-length letter in response to some of my questions

okay, enough for now... but yeah, those were the days!

deadly, i can only imagine, that brings back some good memories, I remember making drawings of different prince songs, i was 13 and the funniest was my impression of Erotic city, had no idea what erotic meant, so i had this pic of a city in heat, showed it to my parents, they just remained silent, and pretended that everything was normal, normally i was drawing paintings of trains at the time lol

IRISHFAN

Ah the memories!! Initially it was seeing the video for 1999 on top of the pops in 84 that caught my attention, then we had MT USA on a Sunday avo which I was addicted to and had to watch in its entirity just in case they would play Prince. My best friend and I soon became addicted! I remember watching all of Live Aid, waiting for Prince to appear, but sadly he didnt ... I was gutted sad

Thank God, we were able to hold our own coz we got a fair bit of mocking for being a Prince fan - I think at the time there were about 6 of us in the town who "openly" admitted we loved Prince! By 88 I had bought all his albums and I can remember the excitment of the summer of 88 waiting for the Lovesexy Album - I had just finished my leaving and it was a brilliant summer - i reckon thats why I love that album all the more. My room was covered in posters, and that summer I had the one from the Lovesexy Album cover over my bed, i remember my Mam would through her eyes to heavan every time she entered my room. I dont think she saw him in the same light as I did, coz she used to call him Skinny Jimmy confused

I definitely reckon the reason for being a horny teenager was as a direct result from listening to my Prince albums, lol. God what fun times! I could ramble all night here, lol .... but I'll spare ye!!!
