Guitar hasn't charted but wouldn't u say its a "HIT"? ok we've had discussions about how the american industry and radio are two sick twin puppies so even though it hasn't charted? (i hear its top 40 in a couple countries) wouldn't you all say Guitar is still a "hit"?
the verizon commercial embedded the guitar riff and the hook in MY mind and i don't really WATCH TV like that. 2nd, it helped to fuel anticipation and awareness that Prince was coming out with a new album. by the time ppl got PE, Guitar felt familiar already. i'd say mission accomplished, albeit unconventionally.

Many of Prince's "hits" aren't actually hits.
Sure, some of these may have charted, but there are many songs that are hits to Prince fans that the non-Prince fan doesn't know. An example of this would be "America". "New Power slide...."

chart position nothwithstanding (we've had that discussion on here ad nauseum, so i didn't think i'd have to go in depth again with examples like America), i think Guitar generated significant buzz for the album and people would recognize the riff and hook.

I would say it pretty much saves a crap album. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I think that A HIT is mainly a product of its exposure to the masses. Radio is by far the best way for a single to become a hit song. However, some songs have gained considerable exposure via a popular video. In this respect, two such Prince songs may qualify: Musicology and Black Sweat. However, Guitar doesn’t qualify yet, as its exposure via the Verizon commercials was all too brief. But hey, Guitar is having some chart success in some countries overseas. It’s a hit somewhere, and that counts for something.
