I prefer Prince's guitar playing over most guitarists.

Back in the 80s everybody was raving about Clapton, Eddie VH, and Hendrix as being better skilled but I guess its just a matter of taste and sound. The technology and quality of Jimi's equipment (compared 2 Princes later work) kinda drives my ears away.

True or False... Did MTV or another awards show recently offer Prince to just show up and play solo guitar for a whole act?

Hendrix is the better of the two IMO. Hendrix set the standard that musicians follow to this day and having died at age 27 we can only dream of how good he could have been had he been fortunate to live longer.

Hendrix definitely...

Back in the 60s effects processors and the like weren't about... Hendrix relied on just a few basic pedals and some that he modified himself to get all those sounds...

Prince I'm sure recognises that Hendrix was the better guitarist, hence he covers his work from time to time: "Habibi" ("Machine Gun" cover), "Them Changes" (Paris "Nulle Part Ailleurs" rehearsal), Red House, VillaNova Junction and Voodoo Chile all played live on many occaisions.

Prince is among the greatest guitarists around today, but not in the same league as Hendrix.

I'd say Hendrix

I'd say Prince of the 80's... Ever since the 90's Prince's playing skills got better but the soul crept away...

To be quite honest the two can't be compared since Prince relies on lots of effects and Hendrix didn't...

But Hendrix definitely kicked arse in his time and still baffles me on record... Whereas Prince is just becoming repetitive even though he's more versatile...

I wonder if Prince would say Hendrix was better if asked this same question???

He said in the ONA NYC soundcheck that when Santana played with him that he put his guitar down...out of respect for sure but maybe also inferring that Santana is a better guitar player.

They both have (had) their own style, but Prince can pull that guitar in way many more styles than Hendrix did, IMHO...Hendrix was basically hard core where Prince can do blues, rock, hard core and comparing musical talent..Prince! Hendrix was great musician, where is my opinion Prince is a musical genious of what music is in generel represents, from writing to singing and lets not forget the dancing wink

It is a pity Hendrix wasn't around longer to make use of advancing techniques. My favourite guitar player is Jimmy Page, simply because he's inventive. That's why Hendrix has is reputation. Prince is great but doesn't really have his own signature sound, having said that though Clapton does and look how dull he is.zzz.

Here's the scary part.

Wasn't Jimi's carreer only about 3 years?

And how much material came from his short carreer?

His solo career, about 3 or 4 years yes. He was a sideman for others before he ventured out on his own. Some people he played for were King Curtis, the Isley Bros., and Little Richard.

And how much material came from his short carreer?

A lot. But a lot of it unfinished too.

Hendrix was at the time and maybe now the best raw rocker on guitar there is, however, Prince has taken what Jimi created and polished it with a great shine. If it were a boxing match Jimi would win a split decision 100-99,Hendrix
100-99,Prince and 100-99,Hendrix.

Prince mimics Hendrix, Santana and other key artists. Just because he can play like them doesnt make him as innovative as them. They created the language, Prince learned to speak it well.

I will give Prince points for being one of the most diverse tho.

First we have to define what means better guitar player?
I personally cannot say if hendrix is better than Vai, or if Prince is better than Hendrix. If we talk about technique nad skills. Prince is better than Santana, Hendrix Clapton, etc. But he is not better than Steve Vai, Satriani, Nuno bittencourt, and all these shredders. But i don't knwo if it defines better. Cause I think Vai blows malmsteen away, even tought malmsteen is faster. I think nobody can say for sure, we only have subjective opinions. It may be a stupid question, but it's a question with no certain answer.

The basis of the comparison must bare a involution and therefore the basis is in disinjection before it reveals knowledge within its realm, the subject is in illusion within its own facilities, the stylist is in a total amanuensis, likewise a comparison, or a opinion, cannot be made

Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin are some of the biggest thieves in the history of rock music. They ripped so much from old blues records its not even funny. It's a miracle that they didn't get sued even more than they did.
