they can't be compared, cuz they play different, and played in different eras.
I prefer Prince's guitar style.

Hendrix for me.Prince for Me has a Sound together with all His Instruments but just on One Instrument doesn't really stand out for me.but Combine the Sounds with His Vibe&it works.but Hendrix also had that Fusion IMHO.He was a tight Bass Player,Drummer¬ bad on Piano either.but you always know when Hendrix is on the Axe. mistermaxxx

Without a DOUBT it's gotta be Hendrix. Every time he picked that guitar up it he could blow you away. The Electric Ladyland album is brilliant, to do that with a guitar WHOA! i love princes playing but i don't think he's in the same class though i was glad to hear him playing the guitar more on the rainbow children. His playing on that was pretty damn good mr. blues.

Hands down Hendrix | |

Hands down Prince. Because to me Hendrix was amazing at his style of playing, Prince can play any style and Prince is one of the best rhythm guitar players ever.

i would be difficult to compare the two based on a lot of things, but chief of which is that hendrix died at 27-28 years of age. if you compare hendrix at 27 years old vs. prince at 27 years old, hendrix was light years, and i mean light years, ahead of prince as a pure guitar player. the thing is that prince (one of the things i admire most about the man) has continued to improve as a musician year by year, and now prince's guitar playing is on par with anything hendrix ever did. and i am a big hendrix fan and have several live pieces from hendrix in which to compare pure unadulterated playing.
also, the thing about hendrix is that he was an innovator. he was one of the guys that really invented the rock guitar thing as we no it today. in the same way that miles changed jazz, hendrix changed rock music in very profound ways. and so, the sort of note for note comparison doesn't really apply to guys like that. ------------------------------------------------

Hendrix can play any Style as well.from Him Playing behind Little Richard to what He did with the Expereince to what He did with Band of Gypsys is Incredible.not to mention Him Rocking the "National Anthem".this Cat did so much in such a short time period.mistermaxxx

And not to mention Hendrix NEVER held back, if Prince would play that way I think he would be even more respected and known for his guitar playing. The heavy guitar night at the Celebration jarred my teeth loose, he's just amazing but he holds back A LOT.

hmm...id say prince...prince has a knack for making his guitar speak his emotion...it might not be technically better then Hendrix..but, for me, thats what i enjoy in music...

Change Prince with hendrix in this quote and you have my opinion.

Hendrix would be the one who is just amazing at making noises out of a guitar,u know what i mean? like u listen & just go "he's doing THAT with a guitar???"
but i rather hear Prince,just the emotion of Prince's playing i really feel.take The Rapture,Let's Go Crazy,Shhh or Sensual Everafter...thats what i like ***************************************************************************************

I'd have to agree with others and say Hendrix, definitely, but, Prince does hold back and could be even better!
maybe someday! | |

Hendrix did a great deal with his short recording years, and I admire him. Had he been around for as long as Prince, I don't know what he would have been able to accomplish. However, Prince has been recording for a much longer time, and to me, his level of skill is greater than Hendrix's. Hendrix was amazing tho, I love his "Blues" album. I am a pretty big Blues fan, and this is definitely my favorite Blues CD.
So what I'm saying is Hendrix is amazing, but Prince has had a lot more time to strut his stuff. "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Better by far to embrace the hard truth than a reassuring faith. If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves a worthy goal" - Carl Sagan

It's sort of like asking if the pupil is better than the teacher. In this case, no.
True, Prince's sound is built largely upon Santana's style. But, the man's gotten quite a bit from Jimi, too ("Witness," the end of "Had U"). Who hasn't? When Jimi was alive, he was the guitarist everyone compared themselves with, the standard. As good as Prince is, and he's AWFULLY good, he hasn't earned that sort of distinction among his peers. And, I don't think he'll enjoy such a distinction posthumously, either. Think of the countless guitarists (myself included) whose playing is built on Hendrix's foundation. As for rhythm playing, Jimi had an ability to combine rhythm and solo playing ("Little Wing," for one). And, as someone else mentioned, Jimi cut his teeth playing the chitlin circuit and backing up folks like Little Richard. He was no slouch, I assure you.

I'll be controversial but honest and say I agree with Natasha. If we deleted all the stupid questions on here, we'd only be discussing around 5 topics right now ... I didn't think this question was a bad one. My answer is Hendrix btw but I don't think that Prince is too far off. I agree with Medoc2003's comments. medoc2003 said i would be difficult to compare the two based on a lot of things, but chief of which is that hendrix died at 27-28 years of age. if you compare hendrix at 27 years old vs. prince at 27 years old, hendrix was light years ahead of prince as a pure guitar player. the thing is that prince (one of the things i admire most about the man) has continued to improve as a musician year by year, and now prince's guitar playing is on par with anything hendrix

Since top musicians such as Prince and Jimi Hendrix are so damn good the only way to suggest who is best is to say who u like better. It's taken for granted that they're excellent. I think it comes down to whose style u like more. I like Prince's style more.
