All Along The Watchtower / Best Of You studio version

Howard Stern played Prince's studio version of "All Along The Watchtower / Best Of You" on his show a few days before the Superball show as a teaser (of course he talked all over it!)

This is a great tune and I think it would have fitted perfectly on 'Planet Earth'. I was hoping it would be a bonus track or available as download on itunes or 3121.com. Will this track ever be released, does anyone have the scoop?

That version should be on the place where 'Mr Goodnight' is now on Planet Earth IMO.

100 % agree, 'Mr Goodnight' is the weak link on Planet Earth and 'Watchtower / Best of you' would fit perfectly.

You think so? I would say it's All The Midnights In The World. But that's a topic being discussed on another stickified thread!

I feel that the covers would best appear separately - either on a benefit album or an EP. I would hate for sales of the album to be credited to the success of a double-cover.

I would not know, my CD has not gotten here yet, that is the last time I pre-order instead of going out to buy it cry

I don't have satellite radio. I think that people should call Howard and request to play that song without talking over it.

I think if it was going to be released (especially as a download) it would've been back right after the Superbowl. but I still hope it happens.

I don't know about that. I think that Dave Grohl would have been cool with letting Prince release "Best Of You", and just last year, John Mayer released a cover of Hendrix' "Bold As Love" on his album Continuum, so the Hendrix family seems to be cool with stuff like that.

there aren't any copyright issues with doing covers, unless you're changing them a lot. as long as the appropriate parties are paid what is due to them (royalties), then you don't even have to ask permission.

'All along the watchtower' is a Bob Dylan original that Hendrix covered unless I am mistaken...

Agree, that was probably the issue. Especially with the album being a free give away... certainly would have hurt Prince's 'margins'.

last month, berlin nightclub played two new studio tracks - "prince & the band" and a remix/reworking of "let's work" with a bit of "le freak" worked into it.

he's got all these great weird studio tracks he's recording and doing nothing with. i hope they're released as a compilation or at least as downloads, because i think it's some of his best recent studio work....or at least the most interesting.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

This may be splitting hairs, but I'm not convinced the recording Howard Stern played was a studio version - I think it was a rehearsal for the Superbowl itself, put on CD (probably CDR) for Howard Stern to play. Admittedly, One Of Us from Emancipation was also a rehearsal take, so this medley could count as a studio track in listings, but in my mind, it was a rehearsal.

I second that....Mr. Goodnight is PIMP DADDY at his best. The vocal blending on that song is classic P.

I agree that the "Best Of You" version Howard Stern played is most likely not a studio version but a recording of a Super Bowl rehearsal, but I guess that's pure speculation on my part. There are rips of the SuperBowl performance of "All Along The Watchtower/Best Of You" floating around and I guess that's good enough although it would be nice to have a better sounding version available since Prince really practically made that song all his own with his incredible performance.

I know all about all the Prince outtakes floating around from the past but I see some new songs mentioned in this thread and I'm kinda amazed and bewildered at this.

i'm pretty sure "Prince & The Band" is from 2001/2002, as he was playing it during ONA aftershows and the 2002 celebration.
