NEW POWER SOUL---a very GOOD album

As a longtime Prince fan, I want to tell you people somethin'...

New Power Soul is my guilty pleasure Prince album!

When it first came out, I thought it would be as dreadful as the previous NPG album.

After the first listen, I thought it was drab by his normal standards...It was, afterall, nothing close to his epic recordings; Purple Rain, Sign of the Times...

But as the summer progressed, and I continued listening, something amazing happened...

I realized how addictive it was. How GOOD it was.

Right from the top, the song "New Power Soul" is one of the tightest, funkiest, most casual sounding trax he'd ever released.

"Mad Sex" is weird, nasty, original, and head-bobbing funky.

"Until U're In My Arms Again" is one of his sweetest ballads ever.

"Come On" is so casual-funky and cool.

"The One" is one of his sexiest slow-jams with great lyric and powerful vocal.

"Until U Love Somebody" is an undercooked yet catchy pop jem.

This is a very good, very listenable album if you don't expect it to be Purple Rain. It's packed with at least 6 great tunes!

It only took 10 years for someone to be bold enough to admit publicly that they enjoyed it. I can't listen to it because of the huge amount of really sub-par, bad songs, but congrats for finding gold in this urinal.

Most of it sounded like Emancipation B-sides, and not even ones worthy of being placed on a future greatest hits b-side package.

Though I'm a defender of Emancipation. I don't like 6 or 7 songs, but out of 36 songs, that's still alot of songs I like--even if it's not "wow omg" good. New Power Soul was just Prince having some fun with the band I guess.

I give it until 10 am tomorrow lol

It's not a bad album for what it is. But for a Prince album, I just find it awful.
Of course, it's not a "Prince" album officially.

I know folks who think it's just fantastic though, which speaks to the genius of Prince--there's something for everyone.

to my ears, there's hardly a "band" to be found on the entire thing lol

NPS is an upbeat cd. Didn't P do something with the song Come On? Something about the bass being in sync with the song Come. Can't exactly remember. Let's not forget that it's an NPG cd with all of the band members input. Rite? Too many ppl dog this cd but it only brings back good memories for me!

You mean Exodus? eek

So you're trying to say that Newpower Soul is a 'very good' album and Exodus is dreadful? lol

I enjoy it also. Its a fun party record based in r&B and funk. Not is greatest work by far but still quite enjoyable.

It was actually mostly Prince... even the drum programming and playing, which I liked.

I'm a defender of 'NewPowerSoul'...

Amazing horn arrangements... some of the best he's ever done.
Stunning background vocals.

"New Power Soul"
"Madd Sex"
"Push it Up"
"Freaks on this Side" (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that one)
"Come On"

This is the most underrated Prince album of all.
Most overrated would be 'The Gold Experience'.

There are some good songs, but the problem for me is the production...

new power soul is cool ..but put up next 2 exodus and this album falls flat!

new power soul is a album that borrows from prince's past material:

the hook in new power soul is borrowed from big fun from exodus

the title is borrowed from the song called new power soul on exodus

the guitar hook at the end of when u love somebody is borrowed from ain't no place like u on mayte's album

the leadline in i love funky music is the same line used in the original version of feel u up

sometimes i refer 2 this album as the rehash album
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

NPS was about the most depressing "new Prince album" I can remember. I can't even listen to it now...just takes me back to a time when it seemed like P. would never get his gifts back, didn't know it, and wouldn't care if he did.

Each to his own, of course, but it blows my mind that there are Prince fans who call this their favorite. I guess I shouldn't be surprised...reading this board you'd think his career started with "The Gold Experience". I may be old -- I am old, who'm I bullshittin'? -- but geez, the 80's? The decade he RULED??? Anybody?

If liking NewPowerSoul is a crime then lock me the fuck up.

It's fun. Come on is great--even better live. I am a fan who was never bothered by Prince's rapping--I like it mostly. Speaking of rapping, I'll take Doug E Fresh over any rapper Prince has ever used.

Lastly, there is nothing as horrid on NewPowerSoul compared to "Jughead
".
"New Power slide...."

How true!!!

The Newpower Soul album is at least as good as Controversy and "The Black Album". Not a classic overall, but contains some classic songs.

It also feels like the last outing for "Eighties Prince" before he morphed into his current incarnation.

Amen, although I think Rave was moreso the last hurrah as far as studio Prince is concerned. NewPowerSoul is enjoyable front to back.

Wonderwall

I dig it too. It definitely didn't grab me immediately but once it was on my iPod and a song from it came on randomly it always made me feel good. I started listening to it more and more, and now I like it. No, its not his best, but its FAR from his worse (that would be Rave for me). The title track, The One, Come On, Until U Love Somebody, & Wasted Kisses are all decent Prince tracks.

Awww yeah...this is one album I literally sat at my desk and drank tea to. Especially "the one"....a song I had been feeling since the video first came out. (and one I could not get out of my head....) Something about the beat and the tempo just screeeamed "slow, sexual grinding". It drips sweet amber-kissed honey into the listener's ears... eek I love to have it on whilst chilling/relaxing with the boyfriend. He's slowly getting hooked on Prince and doesn't even know it... wink
