The Work volumes question

Hi,a question or two about The Work volumes, I've been reading a bit about them on the internet, which is the best, what is the sound quality like? Also, how did they come into existence, were the songs taken from the vault by someone, leaked onto the internet? Cheers

Volumes 1 thru 3 are the best, spanning 1976 to 1991 roughly. Quality is very good and believe are just compilation of leaked vault songs, demos and remixes.

Most are now Outake Classics among Prince Fans

I have Volumes 1-5.

The sound quality ranges mostly from "good" all the way to "above average". There are only a couple songs that I'd say are "poor". It seems of course that the later the track, the better the quality (although not always the case).

A few highlights for me (in no particular order):

Moonbeam Levels
Play
The Grand Progression
Bliss
Good Man
Witness 4 The Prosecution (2 versions)
Old Friends 4 Sale (2 versions)
Empty Room
Broken
Mutiny
Train
Teacher, Teacher
Rebirth Of The Flesh
Neon Telephone

There are a whole lot more that I love, but these are my absolute favorites.

Some are outtakes, some are demos, some are simply unreleased.

I do think that some of the songs are considered "gems" only because they're unreleased! At this point, I would rather they not be released (as opposed to a gem being put on a dud album). Or, just release another albums of all outtakes and demos, but in chronological order.

Bootlegs? Yes.

Some (very few) have made their way into the real world onto available works.

Don't Talk To Strangers was featured on the Girl 6 soundtrack, Rebirth Of The Flesh was available thru NPGMC (although a censored demo).

Whatever your views on bootlegs are, that is up to you. I can 100% guarantee you that if Prince made these available (at even double normal price) I would buy them.

Until then, I revisit The Work and it is like a Fountain Of Youth that replenishes my love for his music.

Cheers, I look forward to getting these and filling up my collection - I still have one or two more albums to get before moving onto the works though. A question though, who first compiled The Work and how did they get the unreleased tracks?

The Work parts 1 - 4 (or 1-5? I forget) were released on the now defunct 'Thunderball' bootleg label (previously known as 'Moonraker'). I think it was their last studio out-takes release, pretty much just collecting every widely circulating out-take upto that point and recycling them for 'The Work', putting them in chronological order.

The rest of them are fan CD-R releases.

There are thousands of bootleg CDs, sadly the market for them has pretty much all but dried up because of the internet and it's ease of use for file sharing and trading.
