Best new Prince-influenced act you've seen Prince's influence on music seems to rise and fall in waves, but it's reaching another high right now. I've seen and heard many new acts who have a definite Princely flavour, but the best by a long way are PAUL ST PAUL AND THE APOSTLES ( http://www.myspace.com/pa...heapostles )
They're a transvestite sexfunk troupe on the London club scene who claim to have beamed down from the Planet Isreal (sic), dress like Apollonia Six meets Rocky Horror, have choreographed dance routines, and sound a lot like Prince (with occasional hints of Madonna and Jacko), specifically the earlyish stuff circa Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999. If you listen to "Great Time" on their Myspace you'll see what I mean, and their debut single is called "Let's Pretend We're Gay" (see what they did there?). They've only played about 8 gigs (I say 'gigs', but they're more like PAs, because they're usually almost totally mimed), and I've seen all but one of them. And they're the most fun thing I've seen for years - everywhere you look around, everyone who's watching has a huge grin on their face. I'll never forget the feeling of seeing them for the first time, completely unaware of what to expect, at a club in Hoxton. Since then, I've booked them to play at my own club, Stay Beautiful, several times, and here's a brief video ad they ran for one of those shows, to give you some idea: http://youtube.com/watch?v=HCeJKSQkQIU And here's a little promo video for "Let's Pretend We're Gay": http://youtube.com/watch?v=1hIM__D-uuk (By the way, I'm not just posting this because they're performing at the Purple Prince Party I'm throwing at Stay Beautiful on Sat 4th Aug. I don't expect many Org-ers to make it along to that, and in any case I'll probably start a separate thread on the 'Fan Gatherings' section about that. This isn't spam, it's a genuine heads-up about an amazing Prince-influenced band you might enjoy!) Anyway, yeah, that's Paul St Paul And The Apostles. So who's the best new Prince-influenced act you've seen? [Edited 7/26/07 8:19am] | |
