I posted a response to this STUPID ASSED review:
Mr. Lewis, I am aghast at your "review" of Planet Earth, a review that focuses on Prince's past rather than the present. So, he isn't naughty anymore. Who cares?! People grow. People change. Who wants to hear an almost 50 year old man singing about oral sex?! One thing that hasn't changed is the beauty within his songs. This album is FULL of brilliant instrumentation. Check out the RIPPIN' guitar solo at the end of the title track. Listen to the vocal gymnastics that Prince throws off with ease on "Somewhere Here on Earth" and "Future Baby Mama". What about the SICK horn charts on "Chelsea Rodgers"? It is such a shame that you can't find the beauty in this release, let alone past releases like "Emancipation" and "The Rainbow Children" . The fact that Prince's music has evolved is a tired story, Mr. Lewis. And longing for the past is somewhat pathetic, don't you think? Occupy Alphabet Street!

I think they have some 'points' in this review, to be honest.
And i also think you read more negativity in it, then there really is expressed in the article. While some songs sounds more inspired then a lot of the material on Musicology and 3121 (as the reviewer states: Prince is putting a bit more effort in it), more and more i have the feeling that he released this album to keep things 'rolling' (his career, the concerts...). I dont think its a crap album, but in general Planet Earth gives me the feeling that Prince felt... Hey its time to release another album, instead of thinking: i feel the urgent need to express my creativity, or, wow i have just discovered these new musicians and want to create a killer-album with them. In essence, that is for me the BIG difference between lets say Parade or Sign and 3121 or Planet Earth.

Well...I also think that Musicology sounded DAMNED inspired, so I disagree there as well. Occupy Alphabet Street!

this is a pretty damn accurate review IMHO. I feel so embarrassed that for many moons I have urged friends to buy a P cd and when pops up for free it's this turd!

Well, I know Miles...dude is a oldschool Prince fan, so he knows his shit...But I think he fumbled the ball with this one...
As for negative reviews, I don't think people should take the "fam" attitude that everything that Prince records should be celebrated...If the reviews are based on the music, I have no beef with that...Hell, the Observor review, which was not exactly postive, was a critique about the music and the Prince of 2007. So I could at least respect that... The problem, however, is that some of the Planet Earth reviews are less about the music and more about the fact that Prince is no longer shocking...Folks don't listen to Bruce Springsteen and wonder why he no longer writes songs about New Jersey...Why should folks do the same to Prince?...I would rather folks shit on Planet Earth because they think its a lousy album, not because he no longer sings songs about incest...Miles could have came stronger than that...

I, for one, do NOT fall into the "everything must be celebrated" camp. I HATED 3121, and was pretty cold about NPS and Rave. I just happen to think that this is one HELL of a pop album. Occupy Alphabet Street!
