The growing pains I could see coming. Prince and his fans are so used to being part of the major label machine...damn straight, definitely YES, Prince's business practices should be improved (and personally I think he needs a manager). But it's too easy to say what someone else should do with their own career if we're not the ones going through the same experience he or she had, especially when it's seemingly to a fan's benefit and not necessarily to the benefit of said recording artist. And it must not be failing to any big discernable extent since the same people who are disappointed are the same ones who still shell out $100+ to see him in concert.
I can't co-sign ya on this one, Shausler. This is just the latest issue in a long line of the dismal state the music industry is currently in with MANY recording artists, Prince was neither the first, nor only disgruntled one within it. It's just that he's chosen to take a road less traveled when it comes to those who made it huge on a major label. His fans need to realize the fact that today's music industry (although they've always ripped folks off) in no way resembles the music industry that Prince signed up with in the late 1970s: (9/25/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- The Eagles' Don Henley and Glenn Frey, Backstreet Boys ( news - web sites)' Kevin Richardson, Clint Black, and representatives of the Chambers Brothers and Bing Crosby told members of the California State Senate about deceptive accounting practices by record labels at a hearing in Los Angeles on Tuesday (September 24). Key issues were the distribution of artists' royalties and the allegedly painstaking audit process, which often takes up to five years. The reoccurring theme: the major labels--EMI/Capitol, BMG, Sony, Warner Music Group, and the Universal Music Group--routinely and knowingly cheat acts out of due income using creative accounting and limiting artists' access to financial information. The Eagles' Frey explained how his band has been in "perpetual audit" with Geffen and Elektra Records over the accuracy of royalty payments, while Backstreet's Richardson offered, "Our record company, after selling 70 million albums, still tells us we are un-recouped." Lola Chambers, wife of Lester Chambers, testified that the Chambers Brothers' signature song, "Time Has Come Today," has earned the group $247 in the European markets in the last 16 years. Clint Black said he recently learned that he still owed RCA Records money, despite having sold 20 million albums and having generated "as much as $150 million" for the label. Kathryn Crosby, Bing Crosby's widow, explained how MCA quietly cut the royalty to the Crosby Estate from 15 to seven percent. And Ruben Blades, speaking on behalf of the Latin music community, pointed out that practices were a "bilingual rip-off." Other speakers included rock guitarist Steve Vai, 1970's funk artist Charles Wright, pop songwriter Jennifer Warnes, and Walter Ward, vocalist in the '60s-era R&B group the Olympics. Also in attendance but not speaking were Tom Waits and Backstreet's Howie Dorough. Henley, who is often considered the ringleader among artists seeking change in the industry's practices, did his part to dispel the suggestion that his motives were personal. "I want you to understand that this is not about anyone's personal vendetta against a record-company president or a record company itself," he said. "We all need record companies to manufacture and distribute and promote our work. But we also need fairness. This is a practice in the industry that has become arcane and has become institutionalized over the past 60 years." Executives from all five major labels had a chance to better explain their business practices, and while the day-long hearing could be considered constructive, it was not without contention. Cary Sherman, president of the Recording Industry Association Of America ( news - web sites), offered some of the most passionate defense. "The one thing we all share is a sense of outrage at the indiscriminate nature of the allegations leveled at our industry," he told the state lawmakers. Sherman continued, "What we're witnessing here is trial by anecdote. It's bad enough that the anecdotes may themselves be inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading, but to then have those anecdotes generalized as though they're applicable to all companies and entire industries is truly unfair. There are tens of thousands of men and women who go to work every day to try and advance the careers of artists and bring great music to the public, and it's offensive and malicious to malign an entire industry based on stereotypes, innuendoes, and myths." Tuesday's hearing--chaired by Senator Kevin Murray--was the second on the subject. A third will also be scheduled in the coming months. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

You've got my signature. Prince obviously only cares about himself, so I'm going to be just as selfish. Im sick of supporting his experiments. I wish Prince would go back to a label just so I could only have to drop 15-20 bucks once a year and get the album the day I pay for it. No more of this pay me in advance for four albums, and who knows when theyll come out, whats on them, or how good theyll be. or if I will even ship them to you properly.
I will always check out new releases from artists I long since ditched, but Im not cool with dropping 100bucks a year on them. Thomas M. Houy [This message was edited Fri Sep 27 14:33:16 PDT 2002 by Tom]

IMO, you seem to have a problem with the NPGMC, which you don't have to join to still get one Prince album per year at the wrecka stow. sayhellotomylittleeditmessage: [This message was edited Fri Sep 27 14:57:39 PDT 2002 by Universaluv]

As long as he owns the masters, and they allow him to release more than one album per yr, i'm up for that.

First of all...Prince has every right to sell his music any way he pleases. Second, you either buy that way or not. Now...I need someone to tell me what event took place this past tuesday that Prince is thanking everyone for attending? (see news on music club website) Please post answer or send me an email.

Remember when Prince said he would release 3 albums a year after his release from Warner?.I think he should reunite the Revolution for one album,look what it's done for Bruce.I know i'm going to take shit for this but it just seems he's lost & a little confused.He always seemed so focused when he was with them.I'm not some new fam,I've been listenening 2 him since '81.

The recording industry is corrupt. This is obvious. When you have an industry where the executives end up with just as much money and sometimes even more than the star artists, you know something crooked is going on.
Artists basically are at the mercy of their label. They have to rely on the company's word that they are being fairly treated. The artists get their checks in the mail and many of them really have no idea of how much their music is really bringing in. Many of the artists who sell millions of CDs end up being in longtime debt to their record company. Some young rapper is probably overjoyed at getting a royalty check for $30,000 but what the rapper doesn't know is that he may have gotten $30,000, but the record company got 10 times that amount.

{ Slave: a person held against his or her own will and made 2 work 4 another.}
Why would any1 want Prince 2 b a slave again? Let him and others b FREE. Let the NPG and Prince be FREE 2 work only 4 the Fams. Just look at how demanding Prince fams and others are. Fams ask more of Prince then any1 ever could. Let Prince please his Fams First and then the the rest of the people. Let Prince make some $ instead of some suit that only wants 2 control Prince and his music. U don't have 2 agree with me. But, please b nice 2 me even if U don't agree with me. Dream Angel Faith

Prince absolutely needs somebody to back him. Maybe he does need a label to spend their money and help out but they should give him everything he wants and they should be a cool label. Since Prince will be considered a new,young artist he needs a cool label. I think it's only fitting. Who will it be? Warners won't bend, Arista didn't do enough, Sony has Problems, who else? Prince needs a Punk label. Or maybe the problem is Prince needs better help with his management. Things don't exactly run smooth like they should. It should be free of Gliches.

Prince is in his mid forties & will be eligable for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next year. How do you get new or young since he is neither?
