Hey Prince--What happened to GROWING as an ARTIST?

Prince, your music has been the soundtrack of my life and for that I'm eternally grateful....Grateful for all you have to offer...especially when you give it for free!

So I don't mean disrespect....

But as an artist, I'm surprised at how much you seem to be treading water. The "Planet Earth" tracks sound like songs you've done before, over and over....

I loved the Rainbow Children...there was a vision with that release...

I loved 3121--it was back to basics, but exciting and fun.

There's always something on every album I like...

But why be satisfied releasing tracks like "Future Baby Mama", which is pleasing to the ear, but yet another rubber-stamp Prince r&b groove?

I read an interview you gave Rolling Stone a few years ago, in which you said you had recorded a new song that you wouldn't release --you thought it was way ahead of it's time, and that "they won't understand that for another 20 years."

Why don't you try us? Keep expanding...break new ground...new boundaries...

Yes, you've given us "News"..."The War..."...These are wonderful departures.

I just want to feel exhilerated and inspired by your albums like I used to...
I want you to get weird again!

Why does everyone who isn't completely satisfied because Prince did not write an album according to their needs, make up their own damn thread about it and even speak directly to Prince in them?

And why do I click on every one of 'em?

Yes, my day sucks.

Aw shucks guys, sorry...didn't mean to spread negativity! I guess I felt the forums were for expressing all opinions, and I think this is a good topic. As people who support Prince's genius, I think there's reason to encourage him to expand creatively and not coast. Thoughts?

Planet Earth is Prince expanding his fan base to a worldwide audience, this includes but not limited to new and YOUNG fans (who will actually be inheriting this planet from all of us who have been destroying it), and not just you old fogey stogies who have been listening to him for eons, like me.

Most young people now days don't comprehend complex music arrangements. Tho their brains can process quickly in video game mode, they seem to have problems absorbing compilations with more than a basic simple rhythm, be it hip hop, r & b, rock, or pop.

So he had to make this album appealing to his new fanbase, all those Superbowl fans who were priviledged to see a master artist in action...just gotta ease them into the enigma that is Prince.

And there are some really good songs on this piece, so what's the problem? Before actually having the cd in hand I like at least four of the songs. That's a lot better than paying 16 17 dollars for a cd and only one or two good songs out of 16, no?

Its funny to hear the same complaints people were making in the 90s again. If you think he's coasting now, he's been costing for awhile. He's hasnt done anything really new since GOLD.

If you just accept that Prince is going to sound like Prince the same way that the Stones sounds like the Stones then you ll learn to accept it as it comes.

News, War, TRC would be fine examples of "growth" if they were actually any good. They are "interesting" at best and in the case of TRC a tragedy.

If anything I'd rather he'd focus more on writing good, melodic tunes with great hooks. (some of the tracks on PE & 3121 come close) than another rambling impenetrable, embarrassing "Jazz Odyssey"

I believe there is an answer to that in a link posted on 3121.

you're probably right. i read an online review by someone of "S.S.T" and they
wrote something along the lines of "this could have been a truly classic song
but the chords and the rhythm is so complicated that it doesn't make sense to
anyone"

Prince can only GROW as an artist, when he grows as a PERSON.

The first step means: leaving the JW-movement.

Prince has definately grown as a musician...his talent on the guitar is legendary and he's getting better.

As an artist, I would love to hear him experiment with sounds, because he
has the gift of sound, so I feel ya in that aspect...
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
