Uptown Magazine

So, how many people here read Uptown magazine? reading

If I'm not mistaken, Uptown is the last Prince fanzine still publishing. There used to be several fan mags. The ones I can think of are Controversy, 7, and The Truth Angel. The Truth Angel had some of the best artwork I've ever seen in a fan magazine, but unfortunately, they didn't have quality articles to go along with the pretty pictures and graphics. smile

I'd have to check my collection lists, but I think the Truth Angel may have only published 2 issues. angel I also have all 4 issues of the NPG magazine, which was not a very good magazine.

I have all 54 issues of Uptown, starting with issue No. 1 from Oct. 1991 and going up to issue No. 54 which was mailed out to subscribers this week. I think it would be nice if the editors and publishers of Uptown could work on the layout and design of the magazine's pages. Right now, there are far too many dense blocks of texts, sometimes even on facing pages. This type of layout is not reader friendly.

As the last Prince fanzine, Uptown is providing a needed service and I hope they will continue to do so and also strive to make improvements and upgrades when necessary.

I hated that stupid NPG magazine (except for the great pictures). What really pissed me off was pages & pages devoted to artists who had nothing to do with Prince. I remember in one of their editorials, they explained that the reason they were doing that was because they were working towards the goal of becoming a regular, legitimate mainstream magazine that could sit on the shop shelves next to mags like Vibe. Well, if I wanted to read about those other artists, I would just go pick up Vibe, wouldn't I?!?
Give me what I paid for: a magazine about Prince you idiots!

And not fulfilling everyone's subscription & not giving a refund was inexcusable.

Essence

I have all issues between the Days of Wild CD ROM and subscriptions but I wonder how long the magazine will continue?

News is available quicker online and archival stuff will run out eventually so we end up with two page articles clutching at straws on comparisons between Prince and Picaso. hahahaha

LOL...I remember subscribing to that magazine in July 1994 but not receiving my first issue until January 1995! By then, they were already done with the second issue.

Yes, you're right about NPG magazine. The magazine had nice cover pictures, but the content inside didn't have enough about Prince or Paisley artists.

People subscribed to the NPG magazine to get Prince content, not to get a different version of Vibe magazine. Also, I think a lot of subscribers never received the final issue of the magazine.

Yes, I got mine in the mail Friday. I'd like to see some better pictures in Uptown. The cover photos of both magazines this month are fuzzy and out of focus. Surely there must be some better pictures of Prince available somewhere.

Since Uptown is the last Prince magazine publishing, perhaps Paisley Park would be open to helping out a bit by providing some better pictures to the magazine. reading

I still have a hard time beleiveing that Prince has nothing to do with UPTOWN. All the details that have come out from so many people who have signed confidentiality agreements just doesn't seem right.

That and all the dates, etc. about unreleased and uncircluating songs seems suspicious.

But that's just me.

UPTOWN is great and I really hope those guys will continue 4 a long time. Prince has nothing to do with the magazine,
there are just some really dedicated guys on there.

The last issue of NPG was #4. They all sucked.

BTW, I have heard from a very reliable source that Prince is behind UPTOWN and that the lawsuit was just a stunt to throw everyone off his scent.

Think about it... of course it didn't go thru! hahaha. He had no intention of doing it. It was just to explain why he didn't contact UPTOWN originally when he shut down all those other sites. Also, Uptown comes out at the same time that Prince is always doing something cool.

Also, as I remember it, one of the early issues listed a P. Nelson as a contributor.

Hmmm. Guess that sums it up.

I think "P. Nelson" should be credited as a contributor in every issue since without P. Nelson, there wouldn't be an Uptown magazine smile
