If these were 80's b-sides - When I Lay My Hands On U, Supercute, The Dance & U Make My Sunshine If these four songs were B-sides from the 80's, would they be considered in as elevated terms as say, for example, Another Lonely Christmas, God, Hello and Girl?
Essentially, Prince didn't need to release compilations such as The Chocolate Invasion. If anything, the songs contained within can be viewed of as equivalent to the excess of songs that became b-sides in the 80's. Compare the b-side classic, Scarlet Pussy, to an equivalent excess, such as My Medallion, a song that would typically be viewed of as indicative of Prince's artistic decline in the 90s/00s. As the equivalent of a collection of b-sides, compilations such as The Chocolate Invasion and Slaughterhouse stand taller than if considered as proper albums, per se. Is it possible that in a decade or so the electro-funk era of Newpower Soul/Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic/The Chocolate Invasion will yield a few songs considered an essential part of Prince's body of work, just as some B-sides from the 80s are now? These four tracks would be my pick from Chocolate Invasion/Slaughterhouse yes, and I put three of them in the 2000s top ten.
NewPowerSoul and Rave are very underrated. I like "Electro funk era" Prince. Glug, glug like a mug | |
