Blackguitaristz's Review of Planet Earth Pt III

Somewhere Here On This Earth...Pretty piano.

Lion of Judah...The opening chord resembles the intro to Purple Rain. Maybe that's what prompted P to ask Wendy and Lisa to do backing vocals. Easily could have fit on the Sign of the Times album from sessions of the Dream Factory.

Resolution...I hear another I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" type song. It simply doesn't sound like a "new" song from P. "New" meaning in the past few years .

Overview;

The title track "Planet Earth" and "Guitar" are the only two songs that sounds like new tracks from Prince that's befitting of a new Prince album. The rest of the songs truly sound like Prince went into The Vault, sifted through some stuff, redone some guitar solos, did a new mix and included it on a "new" album. I was really hoping this time around, P was going to sit down and write a grip of new songs, pick the best of those new songs and wham! Knock one out of the park. Sooo many people and music critics want this from Prince. And for Prince. After all the love he received from the halftime show during the Super Bowl, he was really in the position to release a KILLER album and have it go over like gangbusers. Simply because he had the public's attention again. But with this collection of "new" songs, many of them are retreads of things he has already done, waaaay in the past. More than anything, I want from P, is a current "sounding" album.

I've been listening to the album the past few days and I think it's good,but not great.There are only about three songs that I really,really like alot ("Future Baby Mama","Somewhere Here On Earth" and "Chelsea Rodgers").Many of the other pop/rock stuff sounds bland....it's well-written and well-produced,but just not very exciting.These songs don't grab me.

BGZ...I am so with you on this one! I really want Prince to kick some serious a$$...but alas, I think he just reworked some old songs lying around the studio to release. Which stands to reason...he did give this cd away! So what do you think is the deal? Do you think maybe Prince doesn't have it in him anymore to produce a current sounding cd? Whenever I bring up this topic, people want to kill me. But nobody wants this guy to excel more than I do....I know he has it in him..but for whatever reason...he chooses not to let it out.
