Jon Bream on Wendy & Lisa's involvement on Planet Earth

Virtual Revolution

Much fuss is being made about Prince's reunion with former Revolution members Wendy & Lisa for his "Planet Earth" CD, due July 24.

But Wendy Melvoin told I.W. that she wasn't even in the studio with Prince; he e-mailed files to her, and she and Lisa Coleman added their parts on five songs and e-mailed them back.

Last month, Prince asked Wendy & Lisa to join him during his stint at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and only Wendy was available. Last Saturday afternoon, he summoned her from L.A. to Minneapolis for his three hometown gigs, though she didn't arrive until 9:15 p.m.

She was impressed how sweet and happy he was onstage at Target Center and how his guitar work, especially at First Avenue, was, for a change, more meat-and-potatoes than showy, a point she stressed in a Sunday-morning e-mail to him.

I.W. is starting to think that this Revolution will be e-mailed.

Considering the credits say he recorded in multiple places, it really isn't too surprising that they weren't actually in a studio with him. Especially since he probably recorded whenever the spirit moved him and in between everything else he was doing at the time.

True friendship is in the heart, they know what they feel for each other.

ummmm... weren't there those news tidbits last year that they had gone into the studio together right after the Brit awards?

and we know that the bit about her being called up at the last minute and not being there until 9:15 on 7/7/07 is a lie, so....

Well, untill Wendy can properly play the intro guitar lick and mid section guitar solo to When Doves Cry, then she can't really even speak on P's playing. Be it if P's playing was "too showy" and now it's more "meat and potatoes".

Please Prince, do NOT listen to Wendy. Be as showy as you can. You're hundred times better than her on the guitar.

the linernotes and only cough on one track. lol.

I don't believe anything the Star Tribune reports on Prince anymore. Their coverage of 07/07/07 was completely wrong. They never mentioned the perfume and said Prince was giving us copies of Planet Earth. Also, they said Prince's contract for the Macy's gig was only for 7 songs and that he had to do Purple Rain at that gig.

Honestly, I've always thought Bream had his head up his behind when it came to Prince, but that was for his opinions he expressed. (his 7 favorite Prince songs of the past 7 years were laughable)

well it's not like they never did that in the past. during the filming
of Under The Cherry moon he would send tapes back and forth with W & L
as well.

there are several songs but one i can clearly remember reading about,
being recorded with tapes sent back and forth is AnotherLoverHolenyoHead

nod

so it's not like this is unheard of or totally weird in Prince+W&L-land

See, he needs someone to send him emails like that, stressing stuff. razz Gotta love the challenge and daring of the Prince-Wendy synergy!

Now, if she can just get him to do some meat and potatoes lyrics. smile

The seven songs are (according to the article):

• "Black Sweat"

• "Dear Mr. Man"

• "Musicology"

• "On the Couch"

• "Satisfied"

• "Call My Name"

• "Guitar"

Yeah, right. Apparently his copy of "3121" was missing the title track.

The article was written by Bream and Chris Riemenschnieder, but I have a feeling the songs were Bream's choices. I've always taken Bream's reviews of Prince with a grain of salt the size of Prince's ego. The guy seems to respect the heck out of P as a musician, but the things he chooses to laud and the things he chooses to bash, often leave me baffled.

Agreed. nod He seems like a private person who wouldn't habitually check his email on a regular basis. I heard that he doesn't like to talk on the phone either.
