I'm sure music journalists have a set of cliches they are commanded to adhere to, reading Prince articles these days is like one big deja vu....
The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince is back. The man who dominate the 80s along with his Madonna and Michael Jackson releases his 56th [pluck a number out of thin air] album this week.
After becoming a commercial recluse in the 90s and scrawling the word 'Slave' on his face in a bitter battle with former record company Warner Bros, the purple Prince of pop is back in the limelight with a new collection of songs. Prince's out-put has always varied wildly due to his un-Godly work-ethic, from putting out era-defining classics like Purple Rain and Sign O' The Times, to albums he tossed off on a dirty weekend with one his many girlfriends like Vanity, Sheena Easton or Carmen Electra who got their 15 minutes as a singer in exchange. The pint-sized modern-day Mozart's new CD sees the emphasis back on the music, and although it doesn't quite reach the heights of his 80s glory days, Prince is at least making sense again these days and belting out danceable, if slightly over lengthy, Funk jams and lascivious ballads like the good old days. 3 out of 5. How was that? | |
