Prince music is thick with vaginal references: Scarlet Pussy, Pussy Control, Sugar Walls, Melody Cool, and of course G-spot. But often he will use a thinly veiled metaphor for it, such as in Scarlot Pussy. Obviously, the scarlet pussy is none other than a big 'ole pastrami pink vagina waiting to be licked by the tongue of a dog--that's you and me folks.

What I find most interesting about this, is that Prince blurs the lines between sex and religioin, between the physical world and the spiritual world far better than Michael Jackson blurs the lines between telling a fib about his plastic surgery, to lying his ass off. For example, the song dolphin is thick with metaphor. What is the dolphin in the shape of? That's right, a downward curving penis with a heavy dose of foreskin at the end. What is the dolphin doing? Swimming (his own way) threw the water, and isn't salt water, with its stickiness and smell, just another metaphor for a big ass vagina?

Obviously there are sexual overtones in that, but Purple Rain and other songs which mention water are obviously spiritual songs. Water in Prince's world often represents the spiritual. So the Dolphin could be embarking on a journey of spiritual realization and freedom.

This is not to say that water wholey represents spirituality. In the song Girl, Prince mentions he wants to be the "Water in your bath" which obviously hearkens back to sexual overtones. In this situation I believe water represents a thinly veiled metaphor for bodily fluids, much like his hit single, Cream suggested.

Prince's metaphors often get confused and botched, but they all seem to tie into each other in various ways. I swear, his music would make a great college course, though I pity the student who has to write an essay on The Rainbow Children.
