This song also reminds me of Smokey Robinson's "Baby Come Close."
"Somewhere Here On Earth" is a very classic r&b style slow-jam with a touch of romance and smooth jazz..... ...like I mentioned before, this song takes you back to the days of the high school basement parties with the green/yellow/blue/red light bulbs (whichever-color-you-could-find-in-your-mama's-house)..with the sounds of the Delfonics/Smokey Robinson/Stylistics/Dells playing in the background after a couple of James Brown records were played and you broke out in a Black Sweat (no pun intended)...then the DJ would play a couple of slow jams to cool the crowd off....just in time to slow dance with your first or second crush...that's if one of your friends wasn't dancing with him already and you ended up standing in the corner like a wallflower gazing at the two of them dancing with this expression on your face->... .. hey,. .. when they played the slow jams at these parties, you were either the wallflower or you slow-danced .....oh the good old Crooklyn days. listening to the song yesterday, and today, I picked something up, and I'm wondering if you noticed it too..
at the end of the first chorus, 1'36" or 1'37" into the song, Prince is singing "you're somewhere..." and then either it's an overdub, or a female voice comes in and sings "on Earth"....of course, I might be mistaken, it could be Prince singing that, and I'm just imagining it...take a listen to this and tell me what you hear...?

Very strong song, but I really feel this song hurts the flow of the album. It's the only one I find myself skipping, ands it's entirely because I'm not ready for such a sleepy song after Guitar & before The one U Wanna See. My Legacy

Somewhere Here on Earth Finally a song my Heart sings every lonely night! lol This sweet song is in the same Vein as God & Power fantasic. This Goes on the Classic list! We all want a big hit again because
we want to relive the Hysteria & Pandemonium we experienced when Purple Rain was Hot. Actually, he doesn't care if it happens again or not.

Why? - One of his strongest melodies in years - Exquisite singing, not too understated and not overdone, subtle. - A simple, but strong composition that lends itself to be covered by different kind of artists. - Lyrics that a lot of people can relate to. Maybe its too early, but i think this song will become a next sort of "How come U don't call me anymore" and "Nothing compares to U", a new pop-evergreen. i totally agree, was thinking this 2 day as i listend..quality

Which trumpet ? I've only heard a poor synth trying to sound like a trumpet, with tremolo and vibrato done with roll bar or pedal... I guess Tommy Barbarella is on that thing, but he did better to end the guitar solo on Endorphine Machine. The flute sound is very nice, between Beatles Melotron and Clare Fisher arrangements on Parade indeed. Pretty nice song, but get rid off synths if they're just here to imitate real instruments, and engage a real trumpet player ! Too bad Miles Davis is dead...
