I had the same first reaction to Planet Earth as I did with Purple Rain. First listen I was like I'm not sure if I like this, but a couple more listens I can see this will my favorite release of this year. It's not one of his best, but if you're not stuck on his past and give it a chance it's worthy.

LOVE IT! Prince is in a comfortable place and the music shows it. I kept waiting for more tracks.....The local record store will be selling it for $17.95.
I'm dancing to Chelsea Rogers. (of course, I have to get up out of my rocking chair) [Edited 7/22/07 21:35pm]

Amazing how people can so foolhardy bark up the wrong tree. People slamming down on this song in a dogmatic way are seriously not listening at all.

The album was a huge disappointment. The past few albums keep getting worse. I will always be a huge fan but I have been let down lately. All the changes and promos he does. How he thinks that its ok to come out hrs late at the concerts just because hes Prince. Hes head is way to big for his little body. Hes a disappointment lately.

come on people! can we all take our prince blinkers off and admit this is a pretty
poor effort from our man, god knows i love him but seriously, this is his worst album in since rave. some of the lyrics are pretty shameful. chelsea rogers is amazing though, planet earth (song) aint bad either. but really, alot of this sound dashed off in minutes, wendy and lisa were completly wasted too. it's like he has an album tick list now, rock number, syrupy ballad, r n b light, old school funk tune, blah blah blah. the fact that he's now added vile lullabies to the list is pretty terrifying. more challenging material next time please. by the way, i loved 3121, so i'm not just an annoying new prince project hater. i just expect the very best from him.

No blinkers here when I say PE is a good cut above 3121. Does it have problems? Yeah. But the highlights on it (PE, Guitar, SHOE) are better than anything off of 3121 or Musicology. And the "vile lullabies"? I'm wondering if people who hate "All the Midnight" are Joni Mitchell fans or not?

Whether you like every song on the album or not, nobody, I mean nobody, could put out an album with such a diverse collection of songs. I think the same it's the best I heard for a long time! First because of the music . Second : the words. Hey bro Pi/ Ne that's fantastic! Chelsea make me move and feel al rigth in the car and makes me dance at home at any time. The soul-funky groove is even better than 'Get on the boat'! Just MR. Goodnight, the rap is nice, but the words are too much. You know why?Ep3 4,5 But finally a man who gives a the only solution of the problem of the clima change and war ! What is it? After 4.50 minutes in the 1. song you hear it in the background. HIS name means that 'HE will realise what He has told.' So we will see a goverment with love and justice in heaven and it will come on earth too. His kingdom will come. The earth will be inhabited with peaceful people, because HE did not created the earth for nothing, but with a goal. To be there you have to get to know what is behind this name. and to be courageos like the lion of Judah. This is such a nice and honest song. A little bit sad too.Ma.will hear it. So keep on knocking and asking and you will find the truth and the right sister for you! with love and respect This is a masterpiece!

I think I have already made it clear I really like this album so any comment I make in future is underpinned by that fact.....
I have been listening to the album again and was suddenly struck by the realisation that in my mind the Lion of Judah - the best song musically on the album by far - when swapped in the running order for Planet Earth makes for a much better experience. (And I love PE too so its not about not liking that song). PE later on adds to the cd too. Anyone else think a change around helps? Get up come on, lets do something!

I have also realised that overplaying any album changes the way you feel towards it. I had to stop listening to Planet Earth for 3 days as I went from loving it to being bored...after the break....great again
Really, I do honestly think there are 3 or four stone cold classics on this cd and as far as I am concerned I will be happy if that is the case on every album from now on. And of course there is always that hope that you are going to get a whole album of the Prince music you like best in the future. Here Lion of Judah, Planet Earth, Guitar and SHOE all tick that box. Oh and I cannot wait to hear these tracks on Aug 3rd at the Dome!!! [Edited 7/23/07 11:58am] Get up come on, lets do something!

just bought the album and it is superb so far. Third track in and I love it.
Some of the songs sound like they could be vault material but I don't care. I doubt they are vault material but it seems he had a bit of an agenda with this album or a theme or a recording style. it was like that with TRC and I love that album. i do not like Mr. Goodnight and i'm warming up to Future Baby Mama but all the other songs in my view are fantastic. i can even see how Guitar could be a fucking barnstormer live! I love it. I got it with the mail on sunday the moment the stores opened.
But I have 2 say, upon 1st listen, it didn't leave me tingly like the end of 3121 did ("get on the boat" outro). But after a number of listens, it has really grown on me. Even tracks I initially never thought I could enjoy (The One U Wanna C/All the Midnights) now make sense 2 me & I like them! But the absolute ultimate 4 me is Somewhere Here On Earth. It just keeps calling me, 2 the point where I am behind schedule releasing my own album. GGRRRRR!!! Prince knows what he's doing, & what he's doing ain't gonna change 4 anybody - thankfully! [Edited 7/23/07 17:32pm] good point actually, 3121 and musicology were pretty much challenge free listening, but atleast they were (for the most part) well rounded songs, this album sounds like a re-hash of those 2 albums. having said all this, you know i'll be singing this album word for word in a couple of weeks, like mr goodnight, when i first heard i had to laugh coz no matter how horrible that song is it's still going to worm it's way into my brain, i'll be singing it to my grand kids. ha! by the way "little spanish man"?! he's one to talk!

I think Planet Earth is fantastic, much better than Musicology or 3121.
Looking back, Musicology was Prince getting back into being comfortable in the limelight, making concise pop again. It doesn't sound so confident now. 3121 was more confident but I didn't like its sound. It was actually the first Prince album I had reservations about upon first listen. However, Planet Earth is Prince at his recent best. I enjoy all the songs, the album gels well together, and sounds like a heartfelt work. A great album.

Have not been this excited to actually go buy a new Prince CD since what seems like forever! Cant wait to finally hear it in crystal-clear perfect quailty! The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

hope it's not Walmart or you'll get the wrong CD. From Walmart's website: "Planet Earth" Track Listings & Samples 1. 3121 2. Lolita 3. Te Amo Corazon 4. Black Sweat 5. Incense And Candles 6. Love 7. Satisfied 8. Fury 9. The Word 10. Beautiful, Loved, And Blessed If sample does not play, download Windows Media Player 9. http://www.walmart.com/ca...id=6014460 Either that or Prince really IS repeating himself.
