The people that are saying Prince is overreacting are the same ones who'd follow him to the ends of the earth like lemmings & would agree with him if he held court on this issue at a soundcheck. In his presence I've seen even the most rightous people with views to share swallow them & bob their head to anything the man says or does.

He he !! horns

Well, actually, didn't Divinity6 get into an argument with Prince at a soundcheck?

I do hope the courts decide in favor of the site, and Prince can FINALLY move past all this nonsense.

Prince has got every right to sue. Its his music and for reasons known to him alone, has not released it.

At the end of the day, imagine if you were, say, writing a book and someone hacked into your PC and stole it, then published it on the internet. Youd be mightily fucked off no doubt! Whether that hacker was profitting from it or not.

There is always the argument that whether you have a boot copy of something or not, you would still go and buy the official release. Perhaps that is true. But, like your metaphorical book, it will have been 'read' already and the buzz surrounding the official release would be somewhat tamed.

Look what happened to the Black album. The excitement of a new release was disipated by the fact that most of us had heard it already. Even though most of us bought it, it just never had that 'BANG! New release' feel that would normally follow.

Bootlegs are illigal. And objectively speaking, dont do any good to the artist, even if sales aint greatly effected when they are eventually released.

And yes, I have many bootlegs, so I aint exactly being saintly myself. Just objective.

Prince really hasn't a clue and bootlegs aren't illegal. Only in the eye of the artist. All the great bands in history turn a blind eye to live recordings as they KNOW it makes up part of their legacy. Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Parliament. Even today most band's don't really care if you bootleg their stuff. I went to see Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl was so impressed with his show he asked the fans to send him a bootleg of it. Prince is a control freak, insecure and cares very little about his fans. What did the webmaster of Free My Heart have to gain from this? It wasn't unreleased studio tracks(a completely different kettle of fish as they say) It was a live recording of a show a lot of people paid big money to see in June and he and they wanted to share it with others and relive the celebration. Prince is a wanker. He's just lost another subscriber to his music club and ill grab the stuff from other members thank you..well done Prince.

u know what else?

the fact that m "challenged" p the way he did is a bit of a ballsy move...

...right on. cuz i dunno about ya'll, but nobody else would really have the guts/cojones/balls 2 basically come up 2 the brotha and go, "u wanna sue me? well c'mon then, let's cha-cha!" instead of curlin up one's tail between one's legs and scamperin away.

maybe, just maybe, if folks started takin heed 2 this example and puttin it 2 work in a different manner, p will hear where folks are comin from.

if there's anything that p has taught us via his songs and what-not, is 2 never back down.

my twocents.

I agree that it's ballsy to challenge him on it. Of course it really would have been ballsy to stick to it and continue posting until he actually got hit with a decision or an injunction.

Still, I give Prince some credit for not running to the courthouse on Matt at first. He did the right thing and tried to handle it informally, Matt essentially said "You're gonna have to sue me" so Prince did.

Which is exactly what he did. After he defied Prince, he CONTINUED to share the tracks on his website. That's the day I stopped going to it.

See as I understand it, and I could be wrong, once Matt got sued the site moved away and stopped posting Prince music. As far as I know, he didn't actually wait for a judge's decision to take the site down. That, IMO, would've been truly ballsy. Granted, that's easy for me to say about what someone else could have done.

Well he continued to share live tracks from xenophobia for a little while after having defied Prince...don't have an exact timeline...but not long after, freemyheart fell off the face of the earth. It's back now, though.

i disagree...i dont think anyone is pissed off...we are just laughing at what a dork the guy is...he should be embrassing these outlets like a lot of other net savy artist do..you dont create an online fan club and *not* expect to deal with mp3 trading...sooo, he could turn this in to an oppurtunity..I keep pointing out Radiohead...the fully understand that online fans will be online fans...so, just like The Foofighters, they encourage it...they even went a step further, they asked their fans to rate their new songs and the best of the lot will be their newest release...

prince on the other hand is hating on what lil fanbase he still has... and whats so comical is that he doesnt go after the true booters that are charging his fans for the music...the guy is

I don't know that artists as a group have figured this thing out yet. For every download-friendly group like Radiohead there's a shut-em-all down Metallica. As a fan it's easy for me to say we should have access to everything, but playing with someone else's art/money is always easy.

but metallica (and other bands) arent making the net their sole outlet for distribution...but prince is...the guy is bitting the hand that feeds him...

bowie is another example of how to use the net to your advantage...the online community has helped create a greater interest in his work...his new album has recieved far more responce from the media *and* the public then his previous ventures and i really believe part of that is due to the goodwill he has created within his fans...

freemyheart.com basically challenged Prince to sue him so whats the big surprise? This attitude of "I'm right & just because the law is on your side doesn't make you right" attitude was bound to bring this result. freemyheart.com drew a line in the sand & dared Prince to step over it. He did & now people want to yell foul. Grow up.

Neither is Prince making the net their sole outlet because you can still get his work at retail. Unless it's the music he releases through his club. That's not what Matthew was putting on his site. It was live unreleased music.

That maybe so, but the fact remains, Prince ASKED him to take the songs off his site...he should've done it, no questions asked, with no LIP...hell, Prince MIGHT have let it slide, if matt hadn't responded with that sarcastic arrogant, self-righteous tirade he gave him, and just kept on sharing...
and furthermore, I'm sick of this "Prince hating on his fans" shit...hate is a strong ass word, and it gets thrown around too fucking often around here...Prince aint hating no NOBODY...if YOU feel hated, well then that's your own emotional problem...
if you're gonna share bootlegs, and expect to CONTINUE sharing bootlegs on your website, you had better learn how to play the rules...matt got cocky, and that's why he has a lawsuit against him, end of story.

So sad sad Why can't we just dance?

theres no emotional issues at play on my part or anyone elses..please respect the fact that many of us are at work or doing things at home...we type quick responces (a lot of times without even spell checking)..thats the fun of online forums..you get raw statements...now, if i was posting like nep2unes or oceana...maybe *then* you should be concerned about my emotional state... wink

As someone else said, Prince hasn't made the net his sole outlet. And just because Bowie does X with his music or Radiohead does Y with theirs doesn't mean it's the right approach for Prince. Personally, I wish it was, but that's not my call, or freemyheart's.

p.s. Actually, it's been scientifically proven that Radiohead does, in fact, suck. wink

That's all I'm saying...I didn't see a problem with matt sharing the live tracks, but once Prince told him to stop, I did have a problem with the way he handled the situation. It wasn't very professional, IMO. Hell, I collect bootlegs, and I LOVE my bootlegs...aint trying to give em up...but from what I've learned, observing people in the boot game...if you want to stay in business...you'd better learn how to pick your battles. Matt picked the wrong battle, baby.

well... technically, if they're shunning mainstream media to promote it and it DEBUTS at number one, doesn't that strike you as people buying into hype rather than good music? i mean, they haven't heard it... how do they know they're buying something good?
