Question about "Starfish & Coffee" /Dream Factory/ Crystal Ball

There is an "alternate" version of "Starfish & Coffee" that is around 3:21.
To me this version sounds much better than the "Sign O The Times" version. The alternate version that I am talking about can be found on The Works bootleg.

Anyways, my question is basically...Can anyone tell me anymore about this version? It sounds so much better than the SOT version...Why was it not used on the record?

And how does it play into the whole unreleased Dream Factory & Crystal Ball configurations? The Dream Factory bootleg I've heard has the SOT version of Starfish & Coffee. Was this alternate Starfish & Coffee version supposed to be on the unreleased Crystal Ball ?

Just asking cuz I think this version is so much better and I'm trying to find out more about it. Thanks in advance guys.

there is a Starfish and Coffee from 1995, though the recording I have of it runs 3:17.

I think the differences between the circulating 'out-take' and SOTT versions are minimal, if any. I dunno, from memory it might be a slightly different mix or something, but that's all - they're the same length aren't they?

The sound quality might vary between a bootleg that might've been tweaked and SOTT on CD, which is kinda dull and flat.

You can find the various DF and CB tracklists here: http://www.prince.org/msg/7/116565

Yeah I have 2 versions of it...one is 3:18 and the other 3:21 so I think you know which one I'm talking about. I had no idea it was from '95 though.....any more info about that?

No the one I'm talking about is substantially different. It sounds the same at the beginning but it has a substantially different arrangement, especially towards the end....Like the part that goes "Cynthia had a happy face, just like the one she'd draw..."

Just checked and the one I'm talking about IS that one, it just has a few more seconds of silence at the end.

he re-recorded it for the Muppet Tonight show he was on in 1996.

well, he did it on that show anyway, he might have recorded it
before that (since it's labeled 1995) perhaps he rerecorded it
as part of that whole rerecording his entire catalogue thingie
he was up to back then.

Well, that sure explains it....Well I gotta say the 95 version smokes the Sign O The Times version! I had no idea it was from 95. I was thinking it was a version done by him and the Revolution that didn't make the final cut for some reason.

I respect your opinion and I usually think the original versions of all songs are the best but can you explain why you prefer the original. I really am curious. The 95 version adds so much more to it. The SOT version sound plain in comparison. I still dig it, I'm just saying it seems like the 95 version sounds so much more interesting.

BTW, can anyone tell me what he performed on the Muppet's Show? And was it with a band or just lip sync? Thanks.

The original sounds more organic, breaths more. the later one suffers from most of the problems Prince had in the 90s going forward. Overproduced, overcompressed, overdubbed. The synth doesnt fit in the song and I dont hear Susanna on the back ups.

The break is ridiculous.

Now I understand where you are coming from. Still prefer the 95 version but different strokes for different folks. cool

The show was first broadcast in May, 1997. Uptown's 'The Vault' suggests that the show is believed to have been recorded in Spetember 1996.

Music written by Prince that features on the episode - all pre-recorded / lip-synched:

1. 'Delirious' performed by various Muppets
2. 'Starfish and Coffee' (version recorded in 1995)
3. 'Raspberry Sorbet': joke parady on 'Raspberry Beret' (two lines from chorus)
4. 'She Gave Her Angels' (later released on Crystal Ball)
5. 'Let's Go Crazy' (chorus with Muppets)

.
