It was me that put that out there, regarding P aiming it at Jesse. I agree, P hasn't ever played THAT way on any of his songs. Just shows how versatile P is as a guitarist. P dug Jesse's sound, especially live. But he wasn't ready to let Jesse do a lead solo on a Time record at that point. Plus, he wanted to show Jesse that he could "do" him, so to speak. So, P copped Jesse's sound. The whammy bar, the wah wah/octave effects that Jesse favored a lot. That's the sound Jesse used on the first Time tour. And the second, for that matter. P walked in to a Time rehearsal with the new song in his hand and threw the tape to Jesse and said "Hey man, u play good guitar." Which was fucked up cuz he was rubbing it in jesse's face that 1) not only did I not let u record a guitar solo but 2) I did it in a vein that emulates u. Although really, it doesn't sound like Jesse's playing. The style, the phrasing, are totally different. Even P's use of the tremelo, although cool on this song, u can tell that P wasn't used to incorporating that into his playing. Jesse's use of the whammy bar is much more natural sounding and fluid. And of course, when The Time played this song live on the second tour, Jesse took the solo to another level. When I first bought the album and heard the solo, I KNEW it was P playing. It sounds like P. Folks just assumed, like P knew they would, that people would think it was Jesse. But yeah, I dig the recorded solo. It's one of my fave solos by P, actually.
