Other bad single choices:

"Glam Slam"
"Mountains"
"The Greatest Romance Ever Sold"
"Do Me Baby"
"The Morning Papers"
"Betcha By Golly Wow"
"Take Me With U"

"Do Me Baby"?????
That was a pretty big hit on the soul charts and is one of his best ballads. It became a hit twice in less than 10 years! I kind of agree with u on the others above, but that one is a poor choice for "worst" single.

We'll agree to disagree, then. smile

A top 20 single ain't a flop for an artist that didn't make the top 10 singles chart very regularly anyway.
Purple Rain aside, few Prince albums spawned more than one top 10 hit in the UK.

biggrin

I think Prince cocked up most of the single releases between 85 and 90.

From a purely commercial standpoint, I think he should have released singles in this order.....

85 - America, then Pop Life, Raspberry Beret and finished with The Ladder. This would have kept the general public interested and drawn more people to the Album.

86 - Kiss, Girls & Boys, Anotherloverholenyohead. Great album, weak for singles. Play the big three and run for cover!

87 - SOTT, U Got The Look, Housequake, ICNTTPOYM. Full of potential hits. Could have been P's Thriller if he hadn't have released IIWYGF and lost interest.

88 - Alphabet St, Lovesexy, When 2 R In Love. Like Parade, release the big numbers and run.

89 - Batdance, The Future, Party Man, Trust. Release the singles to suit the market. They want Batman. Give them the most prominent songs from the film. Self advertising.

90 - Thieves In The Temple, Can't Stop, The Latest Fashion. Get the pop tunes out, the gems aren't commercial enough (Joy, Q Of U etc.). Also, cross promote with The Time.

Fire away!!!! biggrin

I'd have chosen If I Was Your Girlfriend as the second single from SOTT. smile

the songs aren't the problem. i'm talking about the actual single - the actual PRODUCT. he's churned out some real moneywasters in the past, but these took the cake. disbelief

I Wish U Heaven = awful single sorry I just don't like it

Arms of Orion = yeeeuuccchhh

Round and Round = stick to the Prince songs already!

Space = great album track but a single, I think not!

oh and there's others but I'll leave it there...
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Probably the best track on the album, but completely un-radio friendly as a single. This one release stopped the album becoming the 20 million seller it could have been.

I've never been crazy about "Do Me,Baby".These are the singles I would have chosen from Controversy,in this order...

"Controversy"
"Private Joy" (the best song on the album, imo)
"Let's Work"

if released as a single,I think "Private Joy" would have been his first big pop hit.

gotcha.. wink

I liked Musicology but it seemed to really appeal to the older generation. I know that everyone over 60 that knew I liked Prince made it a point to tell me how much they liked that song. lol

I definitely agree with My Name is Prince. That song is not crackin'.

I love Mountains and Glam Slam, but I don't think that I would have released them as singles either.

I'd go for letitgo , I like it but its one of the weakest songs on the album , though maybe it was the most radio-friendly . Much as I'd loved to have heard
Pheromone or Come regularly on the radio they wouldnt have got played biggrin
