First Ave clip on 3121

The clip starts off with "Satisfied" and after 3 mins goes into a rip-roaring version of "Down By The Riverside"

Satisfied does nothing for me. I'm surprised so many are calling this such a great show if this is what the 'powers that be' have selected to showcase it -- is it just sentiment of seeing him at a supposed historic stage and getting shut down by the police that has so many bragging this one up?

I'd love to get a recording of the whole show to judge it by its musical merits, as obviously, it was recorded.

At any rate, its the most musically interesting thing he's released in years... is he playing piano on the horn melody? Very impressive muscianship there.
No hard feelings.

No, actually after "Satisfied" it goes into "Down By the Riverside", not "When The Saints Go Marching In"

I c someone has been 2 church. The song is actually called "Study War No More". Most people refer to it as "Down By The Riverside".

Sorry, this is so NOT my taste....what´s with all those horns and that overdominant trombone ? Why even incorporate this kind of horrible, old peoples music into your show ? Sounds like some elderly citizens having a garden party. The musicianship is great but WTF is he trying to say with this ? I´d rather hear Larry G. doing his Sly Stone revue for the umpteenth time than THIS stuff. This is the kind of sound that I don´t like about the current NPG. And the text on 3121.com is , as usual , corny as hell....either talk to your fans or don´t but why let some fools pretend they know some insiders ? This is just as corny as back in the days when he would let other people talk for him on his old L41A website when he got caught fucking at the movie theatre.
Better don´t say anything at all instead of having such embarrassing stuff on your website for the world to see.

Well, if you were talking to me, I praised Down By The Riverside -- this is killer stuff. I think my initial post was a bit confusing, but I stand by what I said -- Satisfied is fine, but nothing very moving nor does it sound different than the cut they had on the site a week ago, but Down by The Riverside sounds incredible. Would love to hear him try something like this on an official release, even though it's been done many times over by other bands as it really shows the chops he and his band have.
No hard feelings.

You´re talking to me ? I´m not bitter..in fact, I still enjoy most of the stuff he´s releasing, even stuff that most people don´t dig so much and I still go to as many live shows as I can but I have the right to express my opinion here, and my opinion is that the musicianship is still great, just as great as ever, if not even better but those horns are a bit too much for me. I know what he´s capable of, I´ve seen it many many times, and I know it´s still there, buried somewhere.

Instead of pushing other artists and some old school stuff he better be pushing his own material , old or new. This is neither fish nor flesh. There is still greatness every now and then ( 2002 Celebration, ONA aftershow Bataclan Paris and Rotterdam, most of the music on TRC despite some of the stupid lyrics, a lot of the stuff on 3121 ) but he is always on the verge of being a tad too cheesy and corny these days, especially when it comes to his website and the language that´s being used there. And I do like horns, I do enjoy Eric Leeds and think he´s influenced Prince´s music in a big way but what I hear on 3121.com and stuff like On The Couch and Satisfied or 12.01 are boring and he can do better than that. His songwriting skills these days leave a lot to be desired.

I really don't like Satisfied: On the Couch pt 2...live or recorded.

Not sure what to think about "Study War No More."

lol (oh yeah, with my Aunties with the chu'ch fans, white handkerchiefs, chu'ch hats and chu'ch clap.lol)Thanks, "Study the War No More" is part of the lyrics of "Down by the Riverside";you can see Sister Rosetta Tharpe singing it in this clip below;she would also sing in nightclubs, which was her way of promoting the gospel through her music and bringing it to the masses. I included her in the Black Music Month thread in June.

The way that Prince's band plays it does have that New Orleans sound especially with the horns, you have to hear them play it live to appreciate it.

ya know, i'm with ya when yer right, but....

hopefully one day you can experience this clip within the larger context of the whole first ave aftershow performance and you'll have a wider understanding of why we're still famming over this.

till then, for what it's worth, your reaction is a more-extreme version of how i usually feel about such matters as the horn section and the balladry, but i just have to say that in the case of this aftershow, your impressions couldn't be more wrong. shrug

So we know that it was recorded? I know many have said similar things already, but the first ave show was the musical highlight of my life thus far. I have seen many shows but never anything like that. I actually think that Prince would be smart to release this commercially; it's about an hour long, mix of old and new hits, cool guests, good improvisation, old and current cover songs and a great performance. Sure, maybe it would only sell to hard-core fans, but there are quite a few hard-core fans out there, and I think many casual fans would be into it as well. Maybe wishful thinking, but man do I hope to hear what I heard that night again someday. Thank you Prince, wherever you are.
