Planet Earth song (first impressions)

Amazing vocals, especially the screaming at the end. It's more of the kind of stuff I wished he would do for a long time. What I hear most is a "real song", which is the best way I can describe my first impression. It's something that you could see him just doing on a piano or a guitar, unplugged or with the full band and it working any way he delivered it. Interesting that he used the guitar effect that sounds like Fred Flinstone running at the end that he used on Fury live on SNL, I dig that sound. Oh and a very mid-70's pop/jazz sounding bridge, odd but works in a strange way.

I must admit i was being a bit dissapointed when i first heard it.

I mean, the people who visited the listening sessions were raving about it.

I think my main 'problem' with it right now is that Prince doesnt sound really passionated in his singing during most of the song, apart from the screams at the end. And the melody could have been a bit stronger.

But on the otherhand, when it comes to the instrumentation and in terms of arrangement i like it a lot better then most songs on Musicology and 3121. There are quite a few turns and changes in the songs, but they are more fluent then those on Three Chains of Gold. The final part of the song really reminds a lot of Saviour from Emancipation, with all the overdubbed vocals and screams.

At this moment its not the real 'gem' i hoped for, but i also havent listened often enough to it to really give it a good verdict.

One thing is sure, its SO much better then Mr. Goodnight, which i heard just recently. That song is so generic and boring even the weaker songs on New Power Soul are better. A true shame he did put that on the album. Really, it is THAT weak (2 / 10 or something).

One final observation: it seems like Prince has decided to use some elements he used for The Rainbow Children (a jazzier touch, a more organic sound, acoustic bass, etc.) to mix it with the sounds he offered on Musicology and 3121, the arrangements on the songs i heard are more subtle and thought over then those on his previous 2 albums, and thats a positive step forwards for me.

Forget to say two other things:

IMO the guitarsolo in the end is most easily his best guitar solo on an 'album' (not counting his solo's during live performances) of this decade, maybe even since the ones on the Gold Experience!

He is just... exploding on it, and it gave me the goosebumps immediately. Really impressive!

Second thought: concerning the lyrics i have a very strong feeling that when they show a live performance of Prince in Minneapolis during the Live Earth event, he will play THIS song. The lyrics seem to be written for it.

Yeah I'm hoping he plays as well. If he does, he will DEFINITELY have to play Planet Earth. I'm really hoping he does.

Very good song. The 60's Beatles feel takes you back to a time that it seems people cared about things. And yet the message is more fitting today. It's an anthem for Live Earth. Hopefully it makes it's debut there.
