I've always disliked it, it just sounded like a poor attempt to be modern. Every song had the same manufactured sound. Jam of the Year sounded like something I'd hear playing in a convenience store or something. Nothing on it really works for me.

Though I will admit, One Kiss At a Time is fantastic. New World also has a killer beat. Face Down is good fun, too.

I may spend more time with it in the future, but it's among my least listened to/favorite. Honestly the music on it isn't bad persay, but the style itself is just something I can't really get too into. Doesn't appeal to me.

IMO Emancipation shows that eccentric geniouses like Prince sometimes make stupid decisions.

I mean, the songwriting on a lot of songs (yes, a lot!, not a few) is among his best since Sign of the Times.

The problem is he choose Kirky Johnson to ruin some of these songs with his lousy, plastic production. And 3 CD's of new material is of course way too long, an overindulgence.

On the other hand, i still think that if Prince had trimmed down the material to a single CD, only leaving the best tracks on it, it would have probably been his best album since Sign of the Times / Lovesexy.

Here we go with the plastic production thing again. I like live sounding stuff also but just because it sounds studio I don't immediately think that means bad. Just different. Sometimes I wanna hear a live sound and sometimes I don't care if it sounds computer done.
"Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

Spent some more time with it. The album is still widely hit and miss, but Somebody's Somebody is easily one of his best slowjams.

Funny. . .I was just thinking tonight about how I really like this set, and how the .org would be ashamed of me! LOL! But I CONFESS! I LOVE BETCHA BY GOLLY! I just can't help it. I don't know why. . .but girl, sometimes the words of another, who is truly in love, just come out. . .right.

Cheese. Total cheese. Can't help it.

And One Kiss at a Time? Puhlease. The man could sing that to me every day for the rest o' my life, and I'd still love it.

But--I will also say that I have created an Emanc playlist on my Ipod so that I don't have to hear it all. LOL! On that fact, you are all right on. I will say, though, that sometimes I think we are too demanding as fans. Every artist has periods in his career when a particular muse takes over. It's just where he was--it's not good or bad--it's where his muse led him. As consumers of his art, we can certainly receive it critically, but sometimes I think we "bust" on him for being lazy or indulgent or out-of-touch or careless when, really, he's just putting it out there based on his own artistic judgment. I would venture that EVERY single Prince song has some poor soul in the world that absolutely loves it, regardless of how weak we may think it is.

Hey--that would be a great thread. Name one song that you would bet that NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD likes. lol I'll betcha we couldn't find one that didn't have someone in the .org who likes it! cool C'mon. I double-dog-dare-ya! razz

I like Emancipation. There was alot of filler tho. Even cutting it down to 2 disks would have made it a good album? Imagine 1 disk with the best cuts??

What I love about the album is "The Holy River". That's one of my fave songs of all time. It's gotten me through bad times when shit's hit the fan in life. I like the overall message: Despite what's going bad in your life, there's always better ahead.

I absolutely love Emancipation! I wish every release from Prince was an expansive 3-disc set. But if I had to settle for one disc this would be the track list I would want:

Jam of the Year
Sex in the Summer
New World
Face Down
Somebody’s Somebody
We Gets Up
Dreamin’ About U
Joint 2 Joint
White Mansion
Style
Sleep Around
My Computer
Emancipation

In fact, when I first bought it these were the songs I burned to a disc for an abbreviated version of the album, but eventually the other songs rubbed off on me so I just listen to the whole thing or nothing these days.
Just say "NO" to cow mucus consumption!

IMO Emancipation is a very personal album. His songs are about Mayte, their unborn/born child and himself. Prince confesses his geniune love for Mayte, i.e Holy River, Soul S, Bettcha By Golly Wow, Curious Child, Right Back Here In My Arms, etc.

Even looking at that record in my collection pisses me off! The fuckin' art work is abysmal and most of the songs sound like they could be played in jd sports. This is one album that makes me hate being a completist.

I've loved Disc 2 and 3 since I got it as a cassette. I love all the love songs and Joint to Joint's unusual 'proposal' at the end. Sleep Around's totally funky and yet the last minute or so I feel like I'm in Vegas at a show. I just had the chance to hear/dance to The Human Body at First Avenue last Friday night!! Totally awesome club banger.... Thanks Lenka Paris

No. 5 on my top 10 albums by Prince of all time. An underrated classic. This experiment was spectacular and those who didn't enjoy it just didn't enjoy the freedom Prince had. Because that was the meaning of Emancipation. Freedom! And if you didn't get it, then you're just a slave in your own right. Free the slave!
