Good Love

Sorry if this has been asked before...

I love this song, but I've never understood how it ended up on the Bright Lights, Big City soundtrack. It doesn't really fit in with the movie (except for the "teenage junkie" line, which seems tacked on) and Prince wasn't really a soundtrack kind of guy in the '80s. So what's the story behind it? Whatever the reason, I'm glad, but I'd love to know. Thanks.

Thanks. But why put it on that soundtrack? That doesn't really seem to make sense.

It probably was more of a WB thing than a Prince thing. I'm sure it probably was good for Prince in the end. The album sold well because of the electric dance stuff on it. ESPECIALLY the BIG hit "PUMP UP THE VOLUME!"

what label is this soundtrack on? because I remember reading in the credits something like "Prince appears courtesy of Paisley Park Records" or something like that. which makes me think it was something outside of his contract with Warner Bros. and why he was able to put it on Crystal Ball in 1998.

i haven't looked at the credits on that soundtrack in many, many years, though.

WB put it out. The version on the soundtrack CD is a longer 5'11'', compared to the Crystal Ball 4'55'' version.

There's really no difference between the two versions, though, is there? Except the one on BLBC has a better sound quality. Otherwise, the songs are the same.

no, the one on Crystal ball is an edit. it's actually about 4'30" minus the segue at the end of it. for instance, in the soundtrack version, it sounds more like an "extended version" because he says "Good Love part 2" a couple of times toward the end. that's edited out on the 1998 version, although parts of the song fro "part 2" are in it at the end.

there's not a lot missing, but it is about 40 seconds shorter.

I'm gonna take a wild stab, and say that they requested a track from Prince for the movie, probably asking for something upbeat they could play in a club, and Prince shot off 'Good Love' to them. Might've been less red-tape and stuff too, since it was previously submitted to WB on Camille/CB.

I like this movie a lot (never read the book though), but I never thought 'Good Love' fit too well. It always seemed indicative of how different Prince's music seemed to almost everyone else's at the time - it does tend to really jar with everything else on the soundtrack. Of course I was glad they included it and we got a new Prince track. biggrin

i think Rebirth Of The Flesh would've been a better choice (and as much as i love Good Love, i'd rather see the other one get a release). but even that doesn't fit very well with the movie or the rest of the music.

Prince; "Why don't you take this song?"
WB; "WHAT is it called?"
Prince; "You deaf or something? It's called Rebirth Of The Flesh."
WB; "That might be a bit too much, Prince..."
Prince; "What's too much?"
WB; "The 'lalalalalala', basically. And WHAT is it your are singing there?"
Prince; "Silly-a-collia. Do you mind? You know what, you ain't getting it. Here's Good Love."
WB; "Ooh yeah, that sounds funky."

They play the track, Prince walsk out.

WB; "Gustav WHO?"

the missing part in crystal ball version are prince voices singing 'la lala lala lala' in a strange chorus. It was nice, I don't know why he edited it.

hell, i don't know why he included it.

for that matter, letting Cloreen Baconskin drag on for 15 minutes and hacking off the guitar solo on Crucial should be grounds to impeachment.

god, that album is a mess.

Speaking of "Mr. Mahler", I wonder how "Prince" gained knowledge of such a classical innovator/composer and I don't know a "DAMN" about "ANY" "Classical" compser. I mean, I have "HEARD ABOUT" "Frederick Chopin", "Ludwig Van Beethoven", "Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart", and "Franz Lizst". But, the most that I have heard about people like "Lizst" and "Chopin" are their names and that is as far as it goes. As far as "Beethoven" and "Mozart", the most that I have heard those two is they are like the "BIGGEST" "Classical" influences, period. I have also heard of "Thelonius Monk", but I think he might be a "Jazz Composer". My head is always in other superficial places.

I wish I had the mind that could maintain, absorb, and feel urgent to read up on those people, but I had never been interested. Hell, I wish I had the mind to absorb "ANYBODY" musically, or with any other field of learning for that matter. What a gift that must be. I know, I know. It is "VERY" important to know some things about "Classical Composers", if nothing else when you want to get deeply into music. However, I have always been a sound guy. I could never get dowm with focusing on the more structural outlook and observent take. I can't seem to communicate with other musicians in no other fashion/manner than with sound. I always loved the aesthetics.

But, I absolutely hate the analytical standpoint ("AND", I like to look into a lot things that have to do with music.). Man, I just wish I wanted to learn those things. My mind is just too puny for all of that "DAMNED" foreign language and differentiated ways of expressing through an intellectual point-of-view. I bet that knowledge would help for making me all the more adventurous from a musical standpoint.

I guess that having a head as heavy as "Prince's Bobble" that makes your body looks too unintact to hold onto it can be of much assistance....as long as you have a brain of the same to accompany you with. You know, the funny thing about this is thatm my mother used to make me listen to "Classical Music" as a punishment when was younger and I would hate it. But, somehow, I can remember that guy, "Beethoven" playing all through my shed tears and falling asleep. sad Ahhh, the memories.....

I recall the director of the movie saying that he personally requested a Prince song for the movie.Apparently,he was a big fan.Prince has never been stingy about allowing his songs to be used in films.

Save bet it was in high school. I think he had some music lessons then. And classical music is everywhere. I read somewhere that Lisa Coleman played classic music all of the time, so he must have gained some knowledge from here as well.

Ah, that makes it more difficult. Basically, you need an emotional entrypoint to certain music you are not naturally inclined to.

For instance, I kinda had an interest in classical music, but it only clicked after seeing a movie like Amadeus. Or going to a Satie recital. At different points in your life you will experience yourself being interested in different styles of music.
