He has a SHARP sense of houmor, you need to be quite intelligent to have that.

I think he's intelligent -- but intellectually lazy, in some ways. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

From what I understand he is not one to venture out into the cities he visits. His world is hotels, concerts, bars, planes. Though he has a desire for movies, I don't see him venturing out into countries and experience Asia, South America or Australia the way the curious tourist may. Obviously his fame may limit his abilities to go to the beach , but Jolie and Pitt seem to get away with it. Would love to see Prince ride a scooter through Vietnam and really experience the tastes of all the countries he is so privledged to visit.
An example of band doing that right now is the White Stripes. They are touring every nook and cranny in Canada, and indulging in the experience, actually meeting and performing for the locals (some free, smaller venues, in addition to the arenas) . What an absolutely cool thing to do, and they seem to place value in the experience. Umm, have you any idea how long this dude's been out? Maybe you're just talking about what he does NOW but he's been traveling the world for over 20 years - we don't know what he did back then b/c he likely wasn't being followed & stalked everywhere like they do now.

I don't think Prince is followed whereever he goes now.He is hardly tabloid fodder. Sure his fans like to attend his shows and aftershows, but I can't imagine paparazi stalking him.
When I hung out with Prince and his band when they did their first overseas shows in France and other parts of Europe (Dirty Mind era), I found P more than the others in the band more likely to stay in the hotel or hang at the club. Dez, Andre, Lisa and I were much more likely to go visit the Eiffel and taste the local cuisine. That's my experience. merf

Musically: a 'savant' like genius, obsessed with creating and playing music, always ready to master a style that is new to him and that he likes, a sponge in that way.
Personally: a lonely guy with unsolved 'issues', trying to fight his demons with his music and actions, someone with a short attention span, easily bored, narcistic, but not always in a 'bad' way, i mean, he probably has problems with socializing, letting see the back of his tongue, his fear of real intimacy, really opening up to other people i see as his main personal 'flaw', it seems to tackle him everytime just at the moment you think he finally is able to brake his destructive habits. Future: it dont matter if its Mayte, Manuela, Larry, Jehovah or Chelsea Rodgers or whoever, as long as he keeps limitating himselve personally by NOT opening up, by NOT confronting himself with his inner pain, by using his music, image or business actions to escape his inner demons he wont get any further in live. Considering his stuborness (which OF COURSE reflects itselve in the stagnating quality of his musical output) my hopes are not very high for the PERSON Prince. I mean, i wont be surprised when he ends up like Miles Davis, a tough 'loner', obsessed with / married with his music, but in essence the same 'Prince' as he was in 1978: shy, reluctant, difficult, frightened. I surely hope it will turn out otherwise.

most people say he'll pick up what they know and take it to another level....sounds intelligent to me...
he's gotten this far in the music business w/o OD'ing or committing suicide or going completely broke...that takes some intelligence AND will power....He's a smart dude who's gullable for religion...why?...i unno...

In just academic matters: You can be talented with words and horrible at mathematics. You can pick up languages easily but perhaps can't write very well. You can a gift for mechanics but not do well in theory. Many times, people who are good in music are also good in mathematics and/or engineering. Correlation or causation? Who knows? But,Prince is obviously intelligent. You don't have a career that he has had by accident, by luck, or by being stupid. You can't produce the amount and variety of music he has had without being intelligent. Prince's best qualities are probably his courage...he's fearless in taking chances that other artists wouldn't. He also has a work ethic that few, in any field, can match. Edison was supposed to have said that "genius" was 99% perspiration. By any stretch, by any measure, Prince is a genius. The man is brilliant. Those are Gemini qualities...don't get it twisted. Why You Jive Turkey You....

I have some friends startin out in show biz (film/tv side), and I can tell you this: At the "scanner darkly" premiere in LA, at the afterparty, Prince was all up on Richard Linklater discussing stuff with his bodyguards around, then he invited Linklater to his house and talked about film late into the early morning. Richard Linklater said he was astonished that Prince was an intelligent film buff of all kinds of films (classic to foreign to art), and trust me, Linklater is a film buff of the highest order. Richard was very surprised and impressed. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

And I don't think his music is stagnant at all. Yes, it's changing but I like it. I like it. "Plaid shorts are completely over."

The lyrics to Resolution have not improved my perceptions of his "intelligence," that's for sure. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

dumbass said: Rightly said: He's very bright, look at the complexity of his lyrics.
you have got to be joking, right. please tell me I have missed your sarcasm, because if there is one thing anyone can say about his lyrics it is that they are the farthest thing from complex. have you heard Musicology, 3121, TRC? some of the worst lyrics of all time in any music. in Call my Name he uses pause throughout an entire verse for crying out loud. early in his career he made brilliant use of lyrics with anaologies, but nowadays his lyrics are adolescent at best. [Edited 7/4/07 10:38am] ...gee ,Dumb Ass on the looooose agian !!!God i just cant help but laugh at the fact that you call yourself a Dumb Ass !!!
