dad makin fun of prince ok i wanted 2 get this off my chest, cuz its really buggin me, everytime my dad gets on the computer, he likes 2 listen 2 my prince music, but when prince makes a sound like "oh oh" like in Guiiar (remix) he will make fun of it , also when prince plays the guitar, my dad would mock prince and the faces he makes when he plays the guitar (all guitarists do that) and another example, 2 day when i had him listend 2 the "Holy Casino" bootleg, during the performance of Purple Rain, Prince says "HELP ME HELP ME" and my dad mocked him once again, but my dad happens 2 b a big fan of prince. The difference is , i never mock prince , any advice 2 get my dad 2 stop mocking and making fun of prince?

especially since i have a feeling that you missed all those decades when it WAS hard being a Prince fan with everyone making fun of you. damn, man, you've got it easy in this era! he's like a legend now, not just some freak in high heels and make up to everyone but us "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." - Kahlil Gibran

Pardon me, but, in an adventurous sort of way, that actually seems kind of neat. To be around at the time when the pandemonium about "Prince", his awkwardness, and overall kookyness was alive and happening seems idealistic to me. It would have been fun to have had to stand in the middle of it all and feel like an actual rebel of something and someone that seemed so unpure and publicly disgraced!

I think its still hard being a Prince fan, atleast in my generation.People my age think Im weird cuz im in2 Prince. And then people who are older than me either think I know nothin about his music or either Im not a "real" fan b/c of my age.You should see the looks I get everytime I go 2 a Prince concert or per4mance.People are always suprised when my ride pulls off and Im the one who came 2 see Prince.

Hell yea I agree with you there - there was a time when being a Prince fan was something you didn't mention for fear of people taking the piss.

I didnt mention I was a Prince fan when I was in high school. He was cool when Purple Rain came out when I was 13, but only a year after that, he wasnt cool anymore and I had problems being a prince fan at school. So I dropped the subject and listened in secret.
When I was in my final year of high school, driving dad's car, someone from my class (who I was giving a lift to) noticed my Prince tapes and he said he loved Prince too. Soon I was to find out that there were MANY secret Prince fans in my school.. We all met regularly to share our love for Prince's music, it was surreal. The pinnacle was the Lovesexy days, when he started to become cool in the "indy" world. We started to listen to his music in "indy" clothes shops and book shops, in fact, he was everywhere coming out of the woodwork... Then I guess that was the time we all "came out" as Prince fans.

i've been on both sides. i was a teenager who took shit for being into him, i even remember kicking a little ass in the name of prince LOL. Now i'm 40 and a dad and i make fun of him even though i still love him. my daughter joins in, she teases him and me for liking him. That's what dads do!! i tease beyonce and TI (who my daughter likes to say is my son in law) because i know brooke loves them.when prince is on TV she'll call me (she lives out of state with my ex) and tease him and me. when he played the super bowl she called saying "what's the matter dad yo little girlfriend dont wanna mess up her perm? LOL". It was too funny, humor is a gift that the closest of family's share freely, i'm no longer a sensitive kid i'm a grown assed man that no amount of teasing will frustrate me in regards to prince.i'm sure prince is a lot less sensitive to the shit people STILL say about him because he's payed the cost to be the boss.

moviestar, way back in the 80's I went fishing with my dad one day and started telling him about Prince. About how some people said MJ was better, etc. My dad was like "what?" "Michael Jackson couldn't be a wart on Prince's ass!" It freaked me out, cuz 1) I liked MJ too at the time 2) I had no idea my dad could ever stick up for Prince who wore makeup and girl's clothes. My dad told me, well rock stars can wear earrings, etc, because they're rock stars. My dad also LOVED Raspberry Beret, it was one of his all time favorite songs! My dad passed away three years ago. Look, appreciate that you and your old man have something in common and let him show it how he shows it. My dad annoyed me with some of his racist remarks over the years, but I'll never ever forget that he respected Prince's talent. He wasn't who or what I thought he was. He had some stuff wrong and he had some stuff right, that's just how we all are, I guess.

Your dads opinion isn't gonna hurt Prince one way or the other, he probably is just teasing you to get you upset. Don't let it bother you. Pick your battles!

Yeah I hate it when people refer to Prince as a faggot. Only the super ignorant people that don't know anything about his music or the man say that. (No offense to your family...lol...my family has said that at one time or another too). Those are the ignorant fools that have never bothered to go beyond the heels and the sexual imagery. The most ironic part of the whole thing is that Prince has probably slept with hundreds of extremely beautiful women, probably hundreds more than the dudes calling him a faggot. How ironic is that. And at times it has bothered me, all the people hating on Prince....right now I'm at a stage though where I really don't give a fuck about the haters and I'm proud as hell to be a Prince fan....maybe it's cuz Prince is kicking ass like crazy these last few years...especially with his Superbowl performance and his SNL performance. It's like if after watching those performances you still don't see Prince for the musical genius that he is then you're a fucking idiot loser and I'm glad you are not part of the community....fuck'em. My friends and I have never been ashamed of being Prince fans. Even back in junior high during his afro days, or when he got his perm and started wearing the g-string and thigh high boots. We would walk around high school blasting his music (we had boom boxes back then...not ipods). Other kids would tell us to turn that "shit" off, or stop playing that faggots music. We never waivered. I saw some of those same jackasses at his Purple Rain concert a few years later...jumping on the (what's hot at the time) bandwagon.

so true, we fans who have been aroun 20 plus years have seen it all. I remember the horror I felt watching Prince in his ass cut out pants, live on the MTV awards.....dear god, my phone would not stop ringing.... [Edited 7/3/07 12:49pm]
