G-Spot

I've been digging into the rarities section of my P collection lately. Just heard this outtake today. This song is great, I'm totally digging it. Who else loves it? And while we're at it, any other great outtakes/b-sides/rarities/extended mixes/whatevers anyone recommends listening to?

'G-Spot' was originally intended for Vanity 6's second album that was being recorded/worked on in 1983 before the filming of the movie 'Purple Rain'. Of course this second album never'd get released due to the fact that Vanity left the group in the process. There is several versions of this:

1) The Vanity 6 version (which is rumored to be in Prince's vault)
2) Jill Jones version (which is the official version)
3) Prince version (which is in the Prince's vault)

The Prince version was recorded in 1983. After Vanity left Vanity 6, 'G-Spot' was then considered for use on both the film and album 'Purple Rain' but was replaced with 'Darling Nikki'. A performance scene was even shot at First Avenue of 'G-Spot' for the film 'Purple Rain' but, was later cut. After that Prince later on around 1985/86, he gave the song to Jill Jones while working/recording off and on for her album. Finally in 1987, it was released on Jill Jones debut self-titled album.

So yes, that was a outtake version that was intended for the film/album 'Purple Rain' but was cut on both and was replaced with 'Darling Nikki'.

Wow, I didn't know all that. Thanks for the history lesson
wink

Maybe in the distant future we'll get a Purple Rain release that has the footage shot of G-Spot in it's special features or somethin' (Yeah, wishful thinking)

At any rate, yes it's a great song in my opinion, and worth a listen at the least.

I highly recommend "Extra Loveable". Not only is it my favorite Prince outtake it is one of my favorite Prince songs ever. Also check out the original version of "Tick Tick Bang" which is better (and quite different musically) than the released version. Both "Electric Intercourse" and "Rebirth of The Flesh" are excellent as well. Check out "Others Here With Us" for something really different and you have what I believe to be the top 5 Prince outtakes.

Great selections, how about these outtakes as well:

1) 'Wonderful Ass'
2) 'Computer Blue' (the extended/alternate version that later was edit down for the 'Purple Rain' album)
3) 'Moonbeam Level'
4) 'Grand Progression'
5) 'Large Room With No Lights'
6) 'All My Dreams'
7) 'Purple Music'
8) 'Something The Water (Does Not Compute)' (alternate version)
9) 'Feel U Up'/Irresistable Bitch (This 1981 prototype version of 'Feel U Up'is cool. It sounds like it would have been great for The Time)
10) 'Possessed' (This 1983 version is great. Although, it may have been intended for 'Purple Rain' but, didn't make the make the cut. The re-recorded 1984 version may be even better the original. Oh yeah, a little taste of the instrumental version of the 1984 version can be heard in the film 'Purple Rain' in the scene with Morris Day and Apollonia at First Avenue right before the performance of 'The Beautiful Ones' by Prince and The Revolution.)

G Spot is the shit. A lost 80s classic if you ask me. It's got such an original Prince-ly sound to it. Other great ones:

Wonderful Ass (TOTAL classic)
Moonbeam Levels (Better than any slow jams on 1999...maybe better than any song on that album, imo)
Grand Progression (Interesting ballad and very uniquely Prince)
The Line (Love this period...wish I could here more stuff featuring the Lovesexy band)
In A Large Room With No Light (Maybe one of his best outtakes EVER. So original and colorful. That tempo is CRAZY.)
All My Dreams (OK maybe the "Double-speed Playhouse" monologue overstays its welcome but you have to at least be impressed by all the places he goes in that song and yet brings it right on home for a kick-ass finale. "Don't ever lose! Don't ever lose! Don't ever lose your dreeeeeams.....YEAH!"

thumbs up! Great song. With that pounding beat and horns. Really like this song. I was listening to it earlier today. G-spot is in my maybe top 5 favorite outtakes. It's a must have in your outtakes collection. cool
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

IS IT?lol

check the lyrics:

"F" is 4 Frustration.
eye'm looking 4 it, is it really there?
"I" is Instigation
eye'm listening 2 the voice beneath my hair.
"N" is 4 the naked body
and 4 what my naked eye can see

G-spot,G-spot
Where oh where can you be?

"A" is 4 america
And 4 the things U read in magazines
"L" is 4 location
eye am a clock, the time is 9:15
"L" is 4 the lust we share
we want 2 know the infamous pleasure.

(Repeat chorus)

"Y" is 4 my yearning
burning in2 mystery
G-spot,G-spot,
Where oh where can you be.

heck, this song is one of my top 2 DEFINITIVE prince tracks.Violet The Organ Grinder being the other one. wink
