Reality check... The artists make approximatly $1.00 ... A damn dollar per album.... He gives you the music and you seek a show to see it properly preformed... He make millions.... Lets not act like we don't have limewire or the like.... shorting him even the dollar.... Again Unlike many artists Prince has a live thing going on... worth every damn dime... I personally have spent a few thousand on that over time... priceless!

When ever a person feel denied the right to make a dollar or two off another they always find something to be angry about but if that give away had been in the States what ever news paper did the give away they papers would have been flying off the shelf so in other words the fans in the uk must of had a field day to get new music before anyone else then it was FREE so jsut stop finding small things to talk about and let the fans get readyb for a tour that is gonna be mind blowing because his actions show me this he himself could not wait to release it

Go Prince! My thoughts are this.....
Prince is hyping his album, there will not be a full length album in the newspaper, but rather a full length "Guitar" and excerts of the other songs from the album, you know like they did back in the early '90's with cassingles! This way people can hear what the album sounds like and we all know it is going 2 be way funky, so it will have people running to the wrekastow to find out what the rest of them snippets is all about! thats my 2 cents.... Peace y'all "E"

since P left WB he has been thumbing the nose of the industry. This free giveaway is serving many purposes, to include; pissing the industry off, free marketing, making new music available so he can get away from his old "standards". P has always contended that the industry is pimping the consumer...true. Consider the cost of a CD in the US, $15-$18. Thats greed. Considering the cost to press a CD (materials, and case) cost no more than $3. Where the Fuck is the rest of the money going. The artist..no, they receive about $1-$2 per CD. So even padding these cost, we're at $7. Where is the remain $$$ going. In my opinion the industry has created this goliath bootleg/illegal download movement by the increasing retail cost. In talking with a few folks, many would still buy CD's if they were under and/or around $10.
So in a nutshell, do what u do P, and prove 2 the public, it's all about the music (although P, u can afford this at this time in your career), and that this is what it's all about. Now making video's, or throwing money at the camera, but just music, and self expression. must be something in the water they drink..

bellanoche said: unkleg said: I'm with you guys, Ian you are absolutely spot on. I want to shop in a record shop, and I can't because they have so little selection beyond 'best sellers'. And you have to fight through all the cafes, internet, games, and ipod crap to get there. Boo hoo HMV, since when have you promoted any artist beyond your own profit margin? Only now do they charge under £10 for chart CDs, back catalogue can be as much as £15, why??? This is such a good point. Record companies are in business to make a profit and there is nothing wrong with that. However, because of that profit goal, they have NEVER been in the business of supporting artists. Some smaller indie shops might do this in limited ways, but big chains do not. So it is disingenuous for them to portray themselves in any other light. I can't count the number of times that I have gone to a record store looking for a non-mainstream act and left empty handed because they did not stock them. Afterward, I would just go home and order it online, then wait 3 to 5 days for it to arrive. So it stands to reason that the Internet, where you can find anything, has ushered the demise of the record store. Therfore, I say bravo Prince! You keep doing your thing brotha! ditto...record stores have stopped carrying the large catolog of older music, thus forcing customers to the internet, thus when u r shopping 4 catologed music, u may as well get some new stuff 4 the lower prices to take advantage of the shipping cost. If the record stores were so concerned with customers flocking the internet, give us a larger selection of less popular, less mainstream artist to choose. Lastly, record stores haven't support P, we, his fam/fans BUY his music, Record stores provide us access to his music. Once again the music industry is attempting 2 make itself the victim.... must be something in the water they drink..

On the other hand, I think Prince has made it clear that he doesn't like the system of things with the record industry/business. I think he's trying to drive them away from greed. Maybe that's part of that whole 'golden age' thing he rambled about at some award speech. Either way, this is more grade A marketing for him, at the rate his name is circulating over this whole thing, everyone's gonna be curious about this album. Actually, what he was referring to in the British Rock and Roll Hall of Fame speech was the quality of music in all genres. Like he said he grew up at a time where you could see Santana, James Brown, Earth, Wind & Fire, Sly Stone all on the same stage. Compared to the wishy washy shit being produced, never mind being played on the air waves today. That's the golden age he was referring to. I think the newspaper shelled out enough dollars to Prince where it doesn't matter if Planet Earth sells alot of copies in the UK or not. Somehow I believe his pockets will avoid any suffering because of this move. He is a brilliant business man as well as a musician, let's not forget that. Fuck the distributers, they never supported his throughout the 90's anyway after he began selling CD's directly from his NPG site. I don't think they have ever forgiven him for cutting them out of millions of dollars back then.

[b]I think everyone should appreciate what Prince is trying to do. He knows money is tight and its just the same as him going to Italy and doing a chalk portrait on the cobblestone streets. Reminding us all that it is "Art" and totally created, owned, distributed and also enjoyed by the artist.Right on P. Keep up the good work brotha. HueMan

Slow down there blondie! He wouldn't be so "generous" if he wasn't already a multi millionaire. This move generates a great deal of public interest. He'll b profiting from this in years 2 come. He knows what he's doin' and I don'T hold it against him. small circles, big wheels!

What a brilliant idea....Prince has always been a trail-blazer when it comes to music. He never conforms to the norm, always keeps in interesting, always comes up with fresh ideas.
I think the only ones who don't like this idea are the ones who stand to lose money because of it (ie. the shops that might not sell as many copies of his new album). As many of here have said before, screw 'em!! Why should they be the ones making cash from Prince?? I think this is a great way of giving them the two fingers and saying that its about the music not the money. What a great way to keep his work an artform rather than a money making exercise! www.filmsfilmsfilms.co.uk - The internet's best movie site!

onenitealone said: I have very mixed feelings about this whole issue but, having read your comments on the other thread, Anxiety, I agree that this is a brave step for Prince. If nothing else, Prince should be applauded for trying new business models yet again.
I hate the feeling that this album is just going to be given away as a 'freebie', however. "Where's the sports supplement and - oh, look - the new album from Prince". I honestly would prefer the album to sell bugger all copies to music fans who genuinely desire it, rather than be given away. It cheapens the artform for me, almost. That old art vs commerce thing. There again, the stranglehold that music retailers have had on the business for years is staggering - it is about time somebody gave them something else to think about. I don't know... I just hope Prince doesn't shoot himself in the foot with this one. But if getting the music out there, to as many people as possible, is Prince's main goal, he's doing the right thing. I absolutely agree with you, and am wondering how do other fans from other countries gets the album? on the 3121 site? or where else in main boxes? ... One concern: if this, apart from the live shows, is the only way UK fans will be able to purchase the album, how do we/new fans purchase the album in future?? That is making it completely limited edition - a one day run?? Looks like I'm going to have to buy about 4 copies of the Mail On Sunday. [Edited 7/3/07 13:26pm] We make our own way to heaven everyday

Prince can do what he wants with His Music!
If he wants to give it away those stores need to find other ways to compete to make their money! What they should do (he should do) is something like Beyonce did offer a DVD video package along with the CD. I just want to take a moment to bash Prince about that! He's very stingy on the media side of things, when it comes to Music! He made that whole Documentary on the Rainbow Children and didn't even release it! His last 2 concert DVD were stingy as well! How you gonna have George Clinton at the show and not perform We can Funk! He's Got countless Video that most of us have not seen that is never apart of those lame Video collections! He seems to be holding back "music wise" too, Musicology & 3121 never cut loose. He's been playin it safe and not even making hits! That’s the reason you're suppose to play it safe for a hit. Well, to make commercially correct music. Playin it safe was never apart of his success formula and I haven't felt musically satisfied since chaos & Disorder, which is really an unappreciated CD. Emancipation, Rainbow children, ONA I began my point with sayin he can do what he wants but, sometimes I wonder who he’s making the music for. We all want a big hit again because
we want to relive the Hysteria & Pandemonium we experienced when Purple Rain was Hot. Actually, he doesn't care if it happens again or not.

Idustries r so funny when it come 2 profit, or should eye say predictable? Xcuse me 4 saying this; but these powerhouses known as "record industries" should know that they don't own Prince and that he will do as he pleases (yay 4 him!). And if giving away records will cause a minimal eddie in their profit pool then so b it otherwise they can learn 2 sign only clowns 2 their label which (4tunately 4 the "machine") will b ideal 4 them as they r willing 2 do anything 2 sell themselves! Goodie 4 u Prince...Eye earnestly salute u!!!
