How many versions off "Superfunkycalifragisexy" exist?

I'm having an argument with a friend if a certain version (from the Dawn sessions) of Superfunkycalifragisexy is an extended version or just an early version...

Can someone say how many versions of this song exist and if there is in fact an extended version?

I say it is an early version of the album version, the version the album version is derived from.

Prince often records a hull of a song, than adds stuff and takes out stuff he doesn't like. See Computer Blue or Erotic City.

That happened with the early version of Graffiti bridge or still would stand all time...

But that doesn't mean one must assume that version is the extended version, but instead an early version.

Yeah, but you don't have to believe something that is listed in the liner notes of a bootleg.

This is the album version for SURE. Just with some bells on.

sounds more rough to me. i'd say his is an early version.
probably not the first one though. somewhere between the
first and the finished product.

And how can you tell? Cuz except for the two extended parts and maybe some backing vocals, the version is exactly the same.

Even Prince cannot recreate them vocals so perfectly.

The vocals are more sparse on this version. It's not an extended version.

well the vocals are way more up front on this one and they seem
more raw. perhaps that's just because they are deeper in the mix
on the released version, surrounded by lusher production.

Still it very similar to the released version. It's not like the early version of Strange relantionship from The Dream Factory...

The Superfunkycalifragisexy you refer to is what I would call an extended version as it is virtually the same; the released version seems an edit of this version.

For instance, the DMSR version on the same set is what I would call an alternate mix, as it is basically again, the same recording as the album version, but with overall alterations, instead of the edits that were done on Superfunky.

I realise that most of these categorisations are totally subversive and in the ear of the beholder.

I love the long version though! headbang

I wouldn't believe everything you read in bootleg sleevenotes.

Though it was indeed recorded around the same time the Prince recorded a
few tracks intended for 'The Dawn', there's no real evidence that Superfunky...
was ever intended for that project as well (in fact I'm pretty sure it wasn't).
Prince recorded several other tracks in that month that had nothing to do with
'The Dawn' - Shockadelica, Koo Koo, One Day (I'm Gonna Make You Mine),
as well as a lot of the first Madhouse album.

The 7 minute version of Superfunkycalifragisexy is just a 'full length' early
mix of the track that was released on The Black Album. It's not a different
recording. The circulating 7 minute version also plays very slightly slower
than it should (only by about -1).

IMHO the "extended" is an early version of the song. It's "extended" because of it's length and P just shortened it. Many of the "early" versions are much longer and he cuts them down and then calls them "extended".

I really think the "Black album sessions" went very differently. There are practically NO boots from it as well as no different versions of the songs. I think all was done very quickly. IMHO of the song in question...it was laying around for a little bit before he finished it. It's the only one in which there is a different version was made.

The Strange relationship song sounds different, I think because of 2 things...1) he took all of W&L stuff off of it and 2) it had been around for a while and slated on several projects, so there would be different versions of it.

Yep...I agree.

Remember that The Black Album is a compilation of track from several sessions.
