I know we have always been fucked over with the pricing, but surely it's to make the fat cat's fatter and to pay 'over paid' 'artists' the going rate. you can't sign 'artists' for millions if you only gonna sell a cd for a couple of $'s or £'s

also, these big record companies have bigger 'over-heads'

I have a feeling that Prince is NOT concerned with the record companies making $$$ off of his work.

Giving away a sampler CD would have been a much smarter idea imo than giving away the whole CD. Just the first 3 songs to get people intrigued to go out and buy the record but now they won't need to..

Yeah, but that wouldn't have been jaw-droppingly brave and innovative. And it wouldn't cause a stir within the music industry.

I mean, who else would be brave enough to effectively give away their latest album to an entire country?

This is a first for a mainstream artist as far as I know. To date, free giveaways of CDs and DVDs in such a fashion has usually meant some obscure, or old piece of art that anybody who'd wanted it would have bought it years before anyway and other people wouldn't especially fish out those releases. As a result, these kind of giveaways have got a bad name. Prince is clearly venturing into this dodgy ground not sure whether it'll work or not. Now, that really is a brave thing for a major artist to do and it just might change the face of such giveaways. Can't imagine Madonna being so fucking brave.

And from a fan's viewpoint, it's just fantastic! Not only getting the album for the paltry sum of £1.40, but getting to hear it before it's released anywhere else.

I bet Prince is making a mint from this promotion, either directly or from any positive repercussions.

I'm talking about cd's in general. $16.99 per cd while the ave artist is making 40 cents a disk. Maybe this is why the music business is dying?

I fear this will be the case too. Simply for the fact that its a giveaway and the convienience of distrobuting it through a newspaper.

Prince giveaway an 'insult' to record shops

Katie Allen, media business correspondent
Thursday June 28, 2007
Guardian Unlimited

The Mail on Sunday's plan to give away Prince's new album for free has drawn harsh complaints from CD retailers with one executive describing it as "madness".

Music industry insiders say the newspaper is in talks with the pop star to issue his latest album as a free covermount.

The plan follows the Mail on Sunday's giveaway of Mike Oldfield's album Tubular Bells, which sparked a row with the musician over the effect on sales. Oldfield attacked music company EMI for agreeing to give away Tubular Bells in the paper, but the Mail on Sunday responded by saying it actually lifted the album's sales in the shops.

The Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) made no secret today of its anger over the Prince plans, saying the rumour of a giveaway "beggars belief".

"It would be an insult to all those record stores who have supported Prince throughout his career," ERA co-chairman Paul Quirk told a music conference. "It would be yet another example of the damaging covermount culture which is destroying any perception of value around recorded music."

"If it turns out to be the case - and we're still trying to get to the bottom of it - The Artist Formerly Known as Prince should know that with behaviour like this he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores. And I say that to all the other artists who may be tempted to dally with the Mail on Sunday."

He went on to warn the music industry not to take record stores for granted.

"How can you expect record stores to support you if you then do deals which threaten the very basis of UK record retailing."

High street music giant HMV was similarly scathing about the plans.

"I think it would be absolutely nuts if Prince's album was given away by the Mail on Sunday," said HMV chief executive Simon Fox. "I can't believe the music industry would do it to itself. I simply can't believe it would happen, it would be absolute madness."

Prince also plans to give away a free copy of his new album with each ticket sold for his upcoming string of concerts in London. The singer had signed a global deal as well for the promotion and distribution of his new album in partnership with Columbia Records, a division of music company Sony BMG. A spokesman for the group said today that the UK arm of Sony BMG had withdrawn from Prince's global deal fearing damage to its relationship with retailers.

"We think it the right thing to do in the difficult retail market," he said. "We are delighted Prince has come back to a major label but this makes sense for the UK."

The Mail on Sunday could not immediately be reached for comment. The Associated Newspaper title has maintained in the past that its covermount CDs of artists such as Simply Red, Madness and Dolly Parton stimulates interest in music.

shocked The way i see it Prince is being generous. Why is it that his generosity sparks such a rash reaction? i would hope that people can still react gracefully in the face of generosity.

I assumed you meant cd's in general, until you brought up Prince again, that's what confused me. While he is selling, he does fine, even from 'low' sales figures, as he takes a much bigger cut than others, because of how he works now.The music business is dying because of the PC, as far as music sales are concerned. Burning discs and file sharing is what's killing/killed the business, no doubt.

yeah, with celotape all over the place! who knows, carded would be the most cost effective option, remember it won't be forever, a proper version will be available to buy later, and the O2 version, hopefully.

Erm, not wanting to be rude and I've had my own digs at people who constantly claim to be in the know and are also constantly proved wrong, but...

Can't we drop this? This thread is about Planet Earth being dropped in the UK by Sony BMG. It'd be a shame if every single thread turns into a dig against the 'in the know' brigade. We've done it already.
Again, not wanting to be rude.

I think that it would be a good guess that the in-store version is going to have added material.
The hints dropped though, is that this is some interactive stuff to shove in the PC. Maybe an extra track or two, viseo or remix.

It'll be a bit unfair to UK fans if they miss out on this. OTOH, doesn't sound like enuff to make the average casual listener/fan go out to buy another copy.

(And GC's prediction was that the 1st line is "Dance the dance electric" and, to his cryptic credit, some of his hints seem to be proving right. OTOH, they're so veiled and half-obvious that it could be coincidence...)

God i love prince. I jus hope its true he plans to give away the CD as mentioned on this thread. What a move. Which some people on here cant see for the trees, going on about: desperate and other kinds of foolishness. Who are you to look a gift horse in the mouth? Did he steal it from you? He can obviously afford to put on concerts for £31.21 and give albums away. Just say thank you and enjoy the music (or not, as the case may be). And as for the ones who think the art is somehow devalued because its free: i have met your kind before. I am a designer and not long ago i exhibited a product at an exhibition and it got a lot of interest. Invariably everyone wanted to know how much it cost and where they could buy one, and i said the same thing to each one of them: sorry its not for sale, but i would be happy to send you one for nothing if you send me a stamped sae. Not one of them fools followed up, but no sooner did it appear online that it sold out. So now you know why i love Prince for this.

Record stores are going to die and soon. If you don't know this what are you even doing on this board. Artist really don't need to pander to record shops and distributors anymore.

"Desperate"? Why choose this word? It's just a way to let many people here it. If anything, this shows that he wants to let many people here it and does NOT care about chart positions, as neither of those give-aways would be counted.

If I was in the music business and the only way I could get people to listen to my new cd was by giving it away, I think I'd have to accept the adjective "desperate" being applied to me.

Well, in the past, the newspaper in question has had all its supplements (including the bonus CDs/DVDs) sealed in a plastic bag within the paper itself, so I'd guess that it will be physically be given away with each purchase. Plus the articles so far have said 'cover-mounted' which also suggests that it'll be a physical addition to the newspaper at that point.

What? Are you serious? Have you never gone to a free concert in a park, or was given a free CD by some underground band or artist that isn't signed yet the album was killer? It's about the music!!! And I thought the record industry was messed up!! I forgot, the record industry thrives on people like this.

Yeah I promote lots of shows and records each year. The band that sells the album to their fans is WAY MORE RESPECTED than the band that just gives them away. Underground artists today need every penny they can get to survive. When you throw your art to everyone's wall it just gets painted over by the majority of those who DON"T give two craps. When I first heard this CD, I instantly thought this is a lot better than the last two. This could actually sell 250K to 500K and if it did that it would set a nice precedent for older artists. These artists could continue to thrive in an unpredicatable environment. Now hearing this news just nullifies the ole timers trying to make money and the new comers desperate to make money. Next Prince Sells Entire Catalog to Bestbuy. Can't buy a hard copy but you can download every album for $29.99 (for a limited time). Music is becoming worthless. If you know anyone who is very talented, tell them not to waste their time because they will never get paid expecially when major artists give away their art for free.

For him , the money maker is doing live shows. Why try to push a CD , sell 500,000 and make $7 a cd. at the same time making money for record compnies and record chains.

He can tour for a summer and make 90 million.

I agree its very simple, this will eventually lead to better music and a leaner more effective music industry. Prince is a leader he know's what he's doing.

isn't your case then one of artistic credibility vs commercial success?, Prince has done the credibility thing with TRC, NEWS, ONA etc. Surely if band wants to succeed they need a lot of people to listen to their music so logic would say that get it out there by any means neccessary. If an Indie band suddenly were picked up by Radio 1 [Jo Wiley] would they begrudge it on artistic grounds ? i think not. What is glaringly obvious is that Prince still has a great rep for live performance in the U.K. and he is doing the best thing possible to capitalise and in effect is saying 'hey look i can make good CD's too'!. I think this is a bold move and deserves much applause as much for having the balls to it.
As for new artists setting out the argument is simple - get as many people to listen to you as possible using the net, media etc. The Artics proved that in spades.

Even if all album sleeves are printed on Hahnemuhle fine art paper there is not way of making that cover look any better. Lets face it most Prince sleeves are hideous looking things, with the exception of sott and 1999
