For me, I think it was timing. During a time when MJ, heavy metal, and the Minneapolis-copycat sound was out, Prince delivered something...different. It was like he shelved the fat bass sound and the pyschedelia (sp) to a large extent and started just merging traditional sounds. When the album was released the genre mixing that's many times more common now was like a slap in peoples faces back then--it was fresh and new. The songs are very tight. It has two of his best ballads "If I was Ur Girlfriend", and "Adore", among some of his best pop tunes "U got the Look" and "I could never take the place of your man." And I adore "It". I love the sparse instrumentation, the simple repitious vibe, and the dark landscape it paints. I don't think it's a "perfect" album, but Prince albums don't need to be perfect to be absolute genius. This was a man who had no desire to release Purple Rain pt.2, and the ATWIAD/Parade/SOTT/LoveSexy string of albums proved it. I just love this period, and love the fact that I got to be a teenager during that time--being fanactical about these albums when they were released is a memory I treasure. well said! Yes I agree - plus I love "it" too. Wouldnt life be very boring if we all like the same music?!!!

I like some of it, things like "you got the look", "starfish and coffee", but some of it is horrible. "It" must be one of his worst ever songs. "Hot thing" is too damn repetitive and cliche, and the last 3 tracks on disc 2 are pretty ropey aswell. "The cross" borders on genius and pretention. Whilst i like pretentious shit sometimes, lyrically the song reeks of something even Michael W Smith would laugh at. Please tell me Iam not alone. i have the sign of the times cd and i really love it.

No you are not alone !
I don't think SOTT is best P album of all times ! But as usual P fans are not fans 4 the same songs or reason ! I don't like the sound of SOTT which is "little" but I like almost all the songs for their ideas, lyrics and so on... Try 2 imagine what SOTT woul have become with a sound à la lovesexy or TGE ? No no no SOTT could have been so so much much much better ! Even Purple Rain and Parade have better sound, better production, are more powerful... I'm only talking about the studio albums, it has no link with the qualities of the song, just the sound !

I'm talking about the types of songs and the diverseness that the album encompasses. It's like Prince from every genre all on one record. It hasn't been topped yet as far as Prince albums go. You name me a Prince album that could stand next to SOTT as far as diverseness, it's not possible. __________________________________________________

You name me a Prince album that could stand next to SOTT as far as diverseness, it's not possible. for that matter, the songwriting is also his best for a full album. and as for production, it's the best combination possible of sounding full-bodied and spare at the same time. he was really onto something in 1986. the stuff that ended up on this album, plus the extras from Camille, Crystal Ball and Dream Factory, and most of the outtakes, are some of the best music recorded in the history of popular music. taken all together, it really is mind-blowing what he did in that year, in the studio. Maybe appearing on Dr Phil or Dr Keith or some other equally corny "look at me, notice me, i've got issues!" crap reality tv-show will get you the much needed attention i guess you seek. But dumping on The Classic is just sad. [Edited 6/27/07 18:54pm] None of you have said why you think its a classic. Heck, again, i can see why bitch ass critics love it (so diverse blah blah blah), and i dont hate on the album, but its no way near the top of my fav Prince albums list. And sorry, i still see "the cross" being embarrassing and waaay too melodramatic, "adore" just being a drag and "it" sounding like a demo a kid could conjure up. I dont agree on most classic albums critics fawn over. But Prince fans are even worse. Shit like "1999" is so much more cohesive then "SOTT", which just doesn't gel very well. I see what you mean about "cohesive", but that's why I like it so much because every song is a different genre of music. Only Prince could do an album like that. ______________________________________________

That has always been a thing with Prince, and thats taking things from other projects, demo's, songs from years ago, then putting them onto an album with songs he woulda done that day. But that is not one of the problems with "sign of the times" (is with "rave unto.....", putting an 80's demo as a title track to an album released in 1999 was never a good idea, no matter how good the song may be), i just dont see the diversity working. "Lovesexy" is the complete opposite in that sense, as he may not cover half as much ground as "sign of the times" does, but its more enjoyable and barely has any filler because the project was focused and not did not try and do everything like "sign of the times". Again, i dont think its a poor album, it just does not work for me as an album.

There has always been something about that album that I don't like. What that is tho I really don't no! It isn't one of his best, although it does have some great songs. Right, no dissenting opinions, majority rules. Wouldn't that be a fun message board. Let's all bow our heads, walk in lockstep and chant "SOTT is the best album ever." I really like SOTT, but it's interesting to hear why someone doesn't. A lot of Prince music is criticized around here. There's no reason SOTT should escape criticism just because it is more revered than other albums.
