I can say exactly the same for your theory of the opposite. The last time I read sheet music was like 10 yeas ago....I'm sure I haven't completely forgotton. Now can Prince read a symphony or some other complicated score...prolly not. He cant read music that matches his caliber of musicianship....but he can read music....if he looks at a staff and sees a g on a ttreble cleff....he know's its a g...he know wht and 1/8 note looks like and how to put together a string of 1/4, 1/2, whole, and 1/16 notes to make a rhythm....do U honestly think Prince doesnt have that simple ability? A lot of musicians don't have that ability. Prince has already stated, going back to his high school years, that he can't read music at all. Why is that so hard to believe? I've played with ear players who rely STRICTLY on their ears, so it is indeed possible... My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

I'm not saying it isn't...but in Prince's case, te was factually a period of time where he read music....I don't think he's done it for the past 25-30 yeard....may 35, to any degree.....hasn't read music at all...but he has in the past and that knowledge is still tucked away inthe recesses of hism ind. Simply put....he played sax for a min in high school...someone tought him how to read it, and he learned it.....why can't people fess up to that. There was a period of time where I playd drums w/ no lessons or teaching other than observing. Can I honestly say I know how to play drums...no....(tho I fake it sometimes.)

Then I'm talking about sound, phrasing, rhythmic and melodic ideas, harmonic understanding, improvisational approaches. Think of music as a spoken language, where "jazz" represents a certain accent. You can learn to fake that accent in a phrase or two - but in the long run, you can always tell... Maceo, for instance, has a somewhat "jazzy" approach in his phrasing, but the notes he plays are usually not that jazz-related...he has kind of the same melodic language as Prince has on guitar. The same goes for Candy. Greg Boyer, I don't know what he's doing...I assume he's a great ensemble player, but improvisation-wise, it sounds to me like he's faking it a lot... Renato Neto has great harmonic and melodic language, but his timing and phrasing doesn't really sound like jazz to me. im curious to hear your take on lisa's playing. What about Sheila E.? She has played latin jazz all her life and also has toured with George Duke and others.

Well, latin jazz (as well as George Duke-style R&B/fusion) is something completely different, especially for a drummer/percussionist. For me to consider Sheila E a jazz musician, she would have to display a convincing mastery of swing 8th note phrasing (including dynamics, sound and voicing on the drum kit, etc). That, to me, would be the most crucial element for a jazz drummer - that and some improvising/interacting abilities. I'm not saying she's not able to, I just haven't heard it yet.

He can play and do it very well, it doesn't matter whether it's jazz or not, at least not to me. "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee
