What a great thread! While waiting for the new Prince stuff to come out, I have been enjoying the Wilburys deluxe re-releasing...I only had those things on CASSETTE! (Anyone remember that?)

I think a few of you have slightly stretched the notion of a SUPERGROUP, though I'd personally drop my money for a number of the incarnations that have come up. Given the lineup of the original, as created by George Harrison while he was doing a b-side for a single from "Cloud Nine," I think the following criteria would have to be met to make it a similar thing (not that it's that big of a deal...I have some free time here...ha ha):

1. The SUPER in "supergroup" indicates that each artist in the group should be pretty much a household name. In the original, only Jeff Lynne is a name that some might not recognize, though his fingerprints were all over production work for a good 15 year period in the 80s and 90s. And his own band wasn't too shabby in their day, either!
2. Songwriting is, for the most part, collaborative.
3. Lead vocals are passed among ALL members of the group, backing vocals are shared by all others. (So, nobody in the group who can't hang on that level.)
4. Multi-instrumentalists a plus (as the roles changed from song to song).
5. The personal sounds of the individual artists' careers compliment each other in the group dynamic (so that, on the final album, there are tracks that sound like one artist but not at the expense of the others).
6. The artists should be something of contemporaries of one another (which is a rule we have to fudge here because Prince would be the most established on most of our lists, unless Stevie was in the group).

I wouldn't have too many members...

I'd bring in Annie Lennox for some vocals, too, but think that MeShell is the best-fitting female for this band.
