It's been a long time since Prince put out a slow jam that I thought off the rip was an instant classic. Old school linn drum machine being used. Falsetto voice being used for the first two verses. A break down in the middle where he's sweet talking a lady. The last two hook's are add libbed with his baritone voice. My wife was with me in the car. She's a casual Prince fan and she thought it was the bomb. I can definately see this song being requested a lot.
I'm looking forward 2 hear this song

Really beautiful ballad. [Edited 6/27/07 5:30am]

Man, what's with the Scorched Earth policy? You need to destroy the past to revel in the present? Third Reichian intent - and those silly sausages wanted to bring back ancient Germanic Pagan Gods - which, incidentally, are far more Marvel Comic baddie than Yahweh and Baal put together. Outrageous Situationist logic. I agree it makes sense to define current politcal and ethical hierarcys in human society by taking any comparison or experimental control out of the equation, but come on, Black Sweat destroys Future Baby Mama.

You must be really ill. I'm just comparing pop records. So you are a conservative person? Black sweat destroys future baby mama? Maybe, not for me though. This is only pop music, don't get too serious (and weird) about it. Relax.

His ear's still tuned to the street corner basketball court banter, I'm sure.

There we go! Anyway, they just debuted the song on the Frank Ski morning show her in Atlanta. If my memory serves me correctly this is a sindicated show. It got a great responce and Wanda, his co-host was begging him to play it again. Mind you this is someone who has not been shy about dissing a song if she doesn't like it. I remember her dogging Musicology when it was debuted on their show. It is what it is

Really beautiful ballad. [Edited 6/27/07 5:30am] I can't see this at all. There's no interesting time changes, no slick riffs, nothing but verse chorus verse late night love balladry. Yes, there's a Linn drum, and maybe it's appropriate because this is one synthetic, pre-made tune. It sounds like something that would fit perfectly on the old late night soul compilation but its too damn vanilla. No hard feelings.

Just heard a cleaner version than before. Me dig! Subtle, but good melody. A little less layers on the vocals maybe and I could do without the talking, but all in all thumbs-up.

Any1 who says Call My Name is no good is completely whack!
Call My Name is the highlight of Musicology and one of my all time favs Cant wait to hear this new joint - seems like it might be the best song on this new CD [Edited 6/27/07 9:08am] The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Interesting thoughts on "Future Baby Mama..." Well, as most of you know, I did my own review of Planet Earth and it always surprises me how Prince fans have such strikingly diverse taste...Gotta love 'em...
Two things jumped out at me from reading most of the European reviews and some of the reviews on the Org... As I said on Housequake, in a previous post, there seems to be a dislike for the more straight ahead "R&B Prince" songs that show up in the form of "Future Baby Mama" by most European fans and other Prince heads that love him for his quirky sensibilities... I've had conversations with some of my folks overseas about Prince's R&B base and the thing that always intrigues me is how they are not the biggest fans of songs like "Do Me Baby," "International Lover," "Adore" and "Insatiable"...Being a cat from the Southside of Chicago I grew up with R&B radio as well as rock (from my crazy ass cousin) and hip hop...So I dig Prince's slow cuts for the most part as well as his quirky shit ("In All My Dreams" is one of my favorite Prince songs of all time)... All this to say if you are fan of Prince's more soulful slow cuts, "Future Baby Mama" is for you...It's a song that could have been on any of his albums from the late '80s to the early '90s...And it has the classic "Prince R&B ballad" structure...Most of the fans that dismiss "Future Baby Mama" are the same ones that praise say "Under The Cherry Moon" because of its adventurous take on the ballad...They can even deal with "The Beautiful Ones" because of the rock edge the song in injected with...But they can't deal with "Do Me Baby" or even an "Adore" because it's straight ahead R&B that is aimed at Prince's core audiance who championed the man in the first place...Very interesting indeed... Basically, its in the mode of an "Insatiable"....And if you didn't like that song, it is what it is...And I dig that...As Sly once said Different Strokes baby... [Edited 6/27/07 9:12am]

Definitely different strokes for different folks, but I can't imagine this song on any of his late 80's work. That's Parade-Batman and just the linn doesn't qualify it for inclusion in that era imho. Well, maybe as a b-side to Arms of Orion.
And to mention this song is the same breath as Adore is blasphemy. And the sultriness in International Lover and Do Me, Baby is a thousand Julys hotter than the pap of FBA. I didn't grow up in the south side of Chicago but I'd like to think I have as diverse a musical catalog as anyone and I know filler when I hear it and Future Baby Mama is example-a of how to pad a cd. I enjoyed your review a good deal, I forget what you said about this track, but if you raved about it, I'm going to have to lower my expectations for the few tracks that sounded like standouts. No hard feelings.

[Edited 6/27/07 9:12am] That's why in a review if u don't know the reviewers taste in music the review can be misleading. Most reviews reveal as much about the reviewer as the object being reviewed. I'm so glad that I am one of those flexible Prince fans. Quirky prince love it! Rock prince love it! R&B Prince love it! Plastic production prince love it! Rappin prince love it! The guy can't go wrong with me lol. I never pick up the new Prince CD with the hope that he will do such and such. I'm always just looking for the next prince adventure.

[Edited 6/27/07 9:12am] Guess that means I'm going to love this song....Insatiable was is a umbelievable song! I don't get why the rock and alternative based fans are so down on Rb Prince. I consider myself one of his core folks and I love all of the sh$t he does well. Rock anthem, love ballad, jazz fusion/rock/funk, pop rock, pop rb. Too many on this board only like one side of P. It becomes annoying sometimes. How can you be bored with Insatiable or Adore...thats just crazy. There is nothign boring about either of those records Murph would like to read your review on Planey Earth..got a link? Thanks Dance... Let me see you dance

As I said earlier, his use of the linn seems a tired attempt to reclaim his glory days. Time to move on and find new sounds and just adding the linn to a new song doesn't qualify it as sounding like classic Prince -- if that was the case Rave would be his greatest work since Sign O The Times. No hard feelings.

The trouble with that thinking is the Linn drum on "Future Baby Mama" is barely audible...He's not even leaning on it that much...I think it comes down to you not liking his more straight ahead R&B slow jams beyond "Adore"...And like I said, it is what it is...And I never said that song was on "Adore's" level...I said that his base R&B fans should like "Future Baby Daddy"...It's that simple...
