Prince and cursing... I don't know why he just doesn't go ahead and curse...his lyrics have every intention of it...but he obviously censors himself. The point of not cursing is to find an alternate and hopefully unoffensive means of expressing that view or thought...he doesn't do that...he just omit's the specific word(i.e: "Hell" in Guitar) or changes it with an obvious substitute(i.e:"Duck" in 1+1+1=3)...just sounds plain stupid and unimmaginitive...
and please, no one knock me on any punctuation error's...we're all better than that.

It's ok 2 have a dirty mind...just not 2 outwardly xpress it.

Thank goodness somebody else has observed this. What's the point of trying to avoid cursing, etc. when your lyrics encourage everybody, including yourself, to say the words in their mind anyway? When he says 'What the duck', it's obvious in his mind and everybody else's that he means 'What the fuck', so all he's doing, as christos7 has said, is not outwardly expressing the word. Ultimately, it's only words and they ain't gonna kill anybody as they stand. And I've quoted him before but Stephen Fry, well known fantastic chap and best dinner guest ever, once said how amazing it is that you can use the words 'torture' and 'death' in a conversation and it's okay, but use the word 'fuck' - the reason why we're all here, and everybody thinks it's the worst thing you could possibly say.

Like I also said on another thread, it's just a matter of convenience.

I think it sounds better and the kids can sing it now.

Really...what's the big deal. If he says "duck" and you want to sing "fuck" instead...so be it! I remember seeing his Musicology show and noticed he changed the words to Dance Music Sex Romance. The part that goes "What the hell U come here for"...he sang "Tell me what U come here for". Also, the part that goes "Everybody, get on the floor...work your body like a whore"...he sang "Everybody, get on the floor...work your body like U want some more". My sister and I noticed changes on other songs also, but it was no big deal. Just enjoy the music and sing your own lyrics...whatever makes U happy

Very true...im sure his fan base back in the 80's also had the same ratio of young fans as he has today - to me its stoopid - swearing has its place in the English language, its when its abused and every second word used is when it becomes unnecessary.

OK, so what's the excuse with brand new music, where he clearly misses out the 'shit' or the 'fuck' when clearly it fits. (3121, TRC)?? He aint just making an old song 'nicer' he's still suggesting the words, but not saying them. What's the point?? it just highlights these words.

I don't curse and think it's Prince's perrogative if he doesn't want to put that in HIS songs! [Edited 6/27/07 2:49am]

[Edited 6/27/07 2:49am] I completely agree with u...but I say...if he doesn't want to curse in his music...don't suggest, set-up and do all but deliver the curse...that misses the point of not cursing, which is to find an alternate way to discuss your message....not just turn the fader knob/slide on the vox track down when the word is said...

I kinda like the clean Prince.Recently watched some old shows and the cursing seemed a bit odd! I still get the idea without the cursing.

A while ago I read something that Maya Angelou wrote, while I can't exactly reproduce it here, it amounted to that she felt that words were things and that the words you used were kind of sent out into the universe.
For example, if a person fills his day with words of kindness towards herself and others, then there is kindness put out into the universe. Love wins. (Seen on bumpersticker)
