Prince lipsynching --- I know Prince is not the only artist to have lipsynched before. I will love him no matter what until the end of time... however, I can't help but notice that I have yet to hear a live version of a song from the Gold experince DURING that era. Hmm, it could be that I don't have access to all those videos/audio files some of you might, but I have NEVER heard a live version of The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. That is the song that got me into Prince when i was 13, so it will forever be at the top of my most favorite... but no live versions!! I was checking the Soul Train show he performed back in 95 (i think it was 95 or 94?) and he lip synched every single song. I was also checking the AMA '95 performance and the performance included snippets of:
Batdance When Doves Cry Kiss Erotic City Darking Nikki Baby I'm a Star Diamonds and Pearls Purple Rain Let's go Crazy Billy Jack Bitch I Hate you 319 He sure included a lot!!! .... and I love this performance because it has so much... but it's sort of sad to -- not even complaining about the lipsynching at this point-- but of his gum chewing while moving around. That said, I really loved his entrance!! Now, have any of u ever heard a live version of TMBGITW??? Hmm, how about "International Lover", I finally heard a snippet of it in a concert in Long Beach back in 85 (or 86). Did he ever perfom the whole song live? Just curious.

When it was number one here in the UK there was a live performance shown on Top of the pops (not in the studio) and I think he sang that live, but it was not the single version - it was the low-register version.

Well, he did many live versions of that song during the Gold Experience tour in Europe in spring 1995. The tour was officially labeled as "The Ultimate Live Experience" since TGE wasn´t out yet.
He used to use a lot of backing voice samples back then but the music was great...tightest NPG ever and some really energetic singing. Check out some boots from that era. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Yeah, he did lipsynch a lot of his 94-95 TV appearances. But there are PLENTY of real live TV appearances from that era too:
"Endorphinmachine" - Nulle Part Ailleurs "Interactive" and "Endorphinmachine" - VH1 Honors "Peach" - European MTV Awards "Dolphin" - Letterman "Get Wild" - Top Of The Pops "Count The Days" and "Get Wild" - The White Room "Lovesign" - The Today Show As others have mentioned, every artist lipsynched on Soultrain. Plus the American Music Awards performance you're talking about was mainly a "tribute" to him, not really a performance per say. It was just a nice surprise that he participated in it. There are plenty of bootlegs circulating from The Ultimate Live Experience tour that have him singing "TMBGITW" live. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

I remember him doing a cool live version of 'Billy Jack Bitch' as well, it was just before he started the Wembley gigs during the Gold Experience tour. The name of the show escapes me though, the one where he had the interview but wouldn't actually talk! only through Mayte! Funny/weird times.

Yep, despite a lot of pre-recorded vocal samples, his live vocals on the 1995 Euro Tour were as live as could be.

It was a show called the 'sunday show' i think, it was when prince wouldn't appear on tv with his face uncovered and wouldn't answer any questions, it was all a bit surreal, can't remember the interviewers name but she obviously wasn't phased by his requirements, unlike some would be. The interview was as much to the NPG as it was to him but he ended it by doing a live version of Billy Jack Bitch as a sound check from one of his wembley shows for TGE tour. I still have the song but not the interview..it was a couple of days after he received his last Brit award and gave a short speech with SLAVE written on his face. 'In concert totally free - on record, slave'

In general he sings live. But some shows REQUIRE lip synching (like Soul Train, Solid Gold, American bandstand). In other performances he used recorded backing vocals, but sang other parts live.

Not everyone--I seem to remember Luther didn't. And a few others. Very few, though.

The problem with TV back in the day is that the technology was not really there for artists to sound really good playing live in that environment. It was a big jump financially speaking from lip synching to a backing track up to a good live sound and Soul Train didn't have the budget.
Don Cornelius was spending the money on multiple cameras to keep the screen hoppin'. It worked.
