But mind you, they've just listened to the cd once. For instance, the more I listen to Guitar, the more I love this tune. I often find more and more depth to some Prince tunes that look simplistic in the first place. Oh, goody. I wouldn't panic just yet. I'll bet these four ballads are really two ballads and two mid-tempo pop songs. This is the kinda confusion that always swirls from these one-off listening sessions.

I agree I don't plan to read any further reviews cuz this is just the opinon of a few that probaly can't accept Pop/Rock little bit of Funk. Needless to say I am very excited cuz it sounds like Prince did something different and will no doubt take some by surprise!!!Hell if I would hve posted a review after I heard SOTT you all would have thought it was shit too. Yep, a fair number of the promos I'm being sent for review lately come with a letter informing me that I've received a personalized disc and my name is inserted into the data files for all the tracks. If these albums or any of their songs are ripped and uploaded to the internet, the labels can detect straightaway that they came from my copy. I don't want to worry about someone borrowing my copy of "Back To Black" and putting it on limewire, so after I've reviewed one of these discs, I break it in half and toss it out.

I know, it are only a few reviews we received so far, but i am carefully trying to 'read' something in those:
Some first thoughts: - Not much 'funk' or R&B on it, it seems, more pop and rock... mildly promising. - 4 ballads doesnt have to mean 'boring', especially when these are done in different styles / tempo's - The reviewers are pointing at a a mix between C&D and musicology, a mix between C&D and around the world in a day would have sound a bit more promising to me. - It is noticed that some songs are shot or cut too short, it seems Prince that the length of his songs is a an aspect that is Prince is not always handling very well (I mean: i think Into the light could have been a classic if it wasnt so short, while the 12 inch version of America and some of his live versions are SO long it gets not only boring, but irritating even). - On first 'sight' it seems like Prince is bringing more richness in the arrangements then on the previous two albums (trumpet, weird sounds, tempo changes etc.). A promising thought. - I dont read no frustation about plastic, casio-like beats. A promising thought also. - The thought of Million Days on Planet Earth? Yikes, stop it. One of his weaker cuts of this century. - The remarks about average melodies, could mean that Prince still has not recoverd from the so-so songwriting on Musicology and 3121 (you know what a "chorus" is, Prince? Of course it could also mean, those melodies are more subtle, songs to grow into.... To summarize:these first reviews give me mixed feelings. The promise of more pop/rock orientated material sounds promising, the same goes for the 'surprises' in the arrangements (it comes over as this album is at least a bit more experimental then Musicology and 3121), but on the other hand, the remarks about average melodies and songs being cut way too short, dont sound very promising. The best conclusion i can get to is, i have to hear it myselve first Maybe a positive sign is, that the reviewers are not very outspoken when it comes to the praise for certain songs, and they seem a bit confused over what Prince is trying to achieve with this album. I remember that albums like Around the World in a day and Parade did get a kind of a lukewarm response at first (especially in the USA), and were considered as more subtle 'growers' later. I dont expect this album to be on that level, not at all, but some albums need that kind of time. I have not forgotten all the rave reviews 3121 did get at the listening parties (his best since the Gold Experience! the title track is a classic!), while that album, at least IMO turned out to be a fairly decent sup-topper in his catalogue. Well, i will see in a couple of weeks.

To me, these sound quite promising and I especially want to hear 'All The Midnights In The World' just to see why it was instantly put down. I'm much more enthused about an album that's not so easy to love on first listen than one that is. Growers are always more interesting than those instant hit albums.

Heres what i want from this CD, no leak at all, I dont wanna know shit till i get it. I dont want samples or full tracks or anything like that. My plan is to get the CD July 20th, that Friday before at NORMS here in NYC, and just take the whole weekend and listen to the damn thing. Its been ages since i have bought a Prince cd on street date, i usually always get them that Friday before to just get in some listens straight through and then look at what everyone else says when the album hits the streeets and then not pay attention to what anyone says because if i like it cool and if i dont cool, thats life.
