Don't panic, people. I remember our French exchange students in high school shocking me with their love of pastel colored shirts and Supertramp.

Just kidding. (Although they did love pastel colored shirts and Supertramp). smile

I think it really deserves a chance because it's sounds like he's trying to put together something more surreal or abstract. Maybe the simplicity is supposed to reflect something or whatever. I like experimental stuff, so i'll give it a chance biggrin

I'd like to know about the opening lyrics of the first song. If it's not "dance - the dance electric", I'd like to see Graycap23s excuse this time.

I kinda get the feeling it's not as bad as it sounds (except maybe i'm completely wrong, but just for the sake of optimism ;P ) Everyone here tends to be super critical of him (prince), and dwells on past songs that they'd like to hear again. Leave room for something new damnit!

Unless I'm mistaken -- and I often am -- these aren't so much reviews as they're first impressions from a listening session.

All you can eliminate from an impression are extremes, and really you shouldn't even be doing that.

This album could be the worst of Prince's career for all I know. But you couldn't identify that after one listening session.

The "3121" impression were mostly raves. So what do you really get; certainly not a hard-earned opinion.

I'm sure that you can tell a ballad from a dance track, but you can't tell me shit about music.

Incorrect.

The poster merely stated that he/she was reserving judgment until hearing the release personally.

That is exactly what I am doing and I am not a 'blind follower' as you so eloquently put it.

One of the advantages of listening to music personally is the ability to form a personal opinion of it. Otherwise, we would all just read reviews and listen to nothing.

What is interesting is to find the common aspects & feelings to all reviews & comments.
They all state that :
- Planet earth is homogeneous (same kind of live sound throughout the cd).
- It is a cross beteween C&D and Musicology.
- There are arrangements that remind of 80s Prince.
- There is no W&L "touch" on this CD. basically wether they participate or not, it could any musician.
- All the midnights in the world is purely atrocious.
- It is very pop/rock oriented.
- Chelsea Rodgers is a fantastic track. 3 of them say it is one of the funkiest and most efficient fun track that Prince has ever done.
- Some tunes are cut too short : guitar, the one u wanna c.
- A million days could be on PE.

I dont see anything wrong with this review? Maybe i missed something, it seems the reviews were expecting Funk/Dance/Techno Prince and got POP/Rock instead, but they didnt really put tracks down. I mean to each his own, i have grown tired of that "new power soul" beat that he has been rotating through every album since the later 90's. I had a feeling that this record was going to be a TRUTH/ATWIAD type disc, especially considering he probably recorded the album in a few months maybe less, since he was in vegas for a bit and getting ready for overseas. Im not worried at all, i really feel its time for a different PRINCE record, im not saying repeat the past, im just saying change the future.

With all the praise Chelsea Rodgers is getting, and it being fun&funky and up-beat, I can now tell you with all certainty that it will not be a single!

I tend to stay away from tracks that get all HYPED up like a chelsea rodgers, i have a feeling it will be one of my least favorite tracks on the record for some reason. Im also glad that Prince is cutting the song times down, he on occasion has a habit of ruining a GREAT song with an unecessary solo, case in point "The Holy River" amazing song, should have been cut down, that added part at the end of it on the album is one of the worst things ever and ruined the song, which is why i cant listen to the album version. I like Prince jamming, but in concert. Im anxious for this record mainly from what im hearing from others, i like the fact that CHAOS has come up alot in reviews, this is an album that to me was one of his best, but is almost hated by everyone, and i have never seen a good review for it in print, and i have seen some ZERO's in print for it, including the NY daily news when Jim Farber gave him a Zero for it, and then 4 months later gave Emancipation five stars, and i was like, dude are u smoking!

lol same, i'd seriously take his worse recordings and call it a good day. mostly because Prince's most unpopular songs are still good on some level.

Just from the description of the tracks, I get a Parade feeling. I'd love for this album to be pop iso the usual funk, r&b. We've had enough of that.

I'm officially looking forward to the album now!

...dont pay too much attention to reviews...thats just one persons interpretation ,one person comments on his or her taste...millions of fans out there with millions of different tastes...and from what I know about Prince music is that you might seem to not like certain songs and then boom they grow on you & end up being favorites...for me fury did just that ...i just could not figure out the big deal every one was talking about ..one day i put on my head phone and cranked it up real loud because the girlfriend was nagging me,and damn!!! Then it grabbed me and now i am hooked ...

My thoughts exactly. People talk terrible about a lot of things I like. I could care less. I'll still buy it & check it out for myself.

if you don't care for other peoples opinions in regards to Prince, there is no need to be grateful for the review. seems like an awfully big and blatant contradiction if you ask me. you don't thank someone for something you don't appreciate, and you don't appreciate something you don't care about.

so, when he gets good reviews you usually don't like the album? or do you simply like all his albums, regardless of reviews? or do you like some albums and not others, regardless of reviews. if it is any option other than the first, it seems like a review has nothing to do with whether you like an album or not, thus there is no need to emphasize the review in regrdas to your enjoyment at all, other than to attempt to negate the bad review and make yourself simply feel better about Prince's work.

Of course I came to this thread to glean a little insight to the album before it comes out. It's at least nice to get track names and a little description of what the sound will be like.

But let's remember people, to keep an open mind. We haven't heard 'Planet Earth' yet.

from the one on this post, it didn't seem bad, more so surprising. it wasn't untill the summary towards the end i think that they said it wasn't good. i can't wait though.
