man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

if were gettin on this trip... what about Chris Dawson and 'The Revolution' and 'Crystal Ball' !!

Yes, that all went tits up, didn't it ?

There was some party that was organised (I sent 20 or £30 for tickets).

The police got involved, all pretty messy and I never saw my cash or tickets or the party.

yeh, i remember that, i was in contact with Chris/The Revolution after that happened, askin 4 my money back and it all got very uncomfortable, with Chris upset that he had lost everyones trust an' all.

out of interest, i was just wondering if any one else had a similar experience 2 me, in that after the 'party incident' Chris/the revolution sent me a selection of 12inch/LP sleeve size cardboard sheets (the same that you send out to protect records in the post) with what appeared to be Prince's autograph on some and 'Love God'on others, all in large black pen, and comparing the style of the writing to others i have seen, and r lucky enough 2 have, they seemed genuine, and i know that Chris Dawson did have at least one meeting with Prince at which Prince signed a load of stuff, so who knows ? it appeared 2 b a way of 'the revolution' saying sorry 4 the screw up ?

In September 1993 Prince played a last show of the ActII tour at Wembley Arena. Whilst waiting outside some girls were asked by members of Prince's party to help get some names and addresses for a new Prince run fanclub, in return they were promised front row seats for that nights concert. The girls did the work but never got the promised front row seats and were roundly ignored.

They complained to Eileen who took it up with Prince's people but they didn't want to know. Eileen then found out that Paisley Park were planning to set up a fanclub against her. She felt deceived and was very upset. Hence she resolved to shut Controversy down.

There were other niggles going on but that was what really pushed her over the edge.

All of the above was Eileen what told me both over the phone and face to face. I have no resaon to doubt her.

I last saw Eileen in 1995 during the Gold Tour - she got me and my wife tickets for one of the nights and we sat with her and her husband. It was funny seeing Prince still playing to her after what had happened.

Don't know what she is up to these days but I hope she is well. That woman put a lot of heart and her own money into Controversy.

Wow, that really brings back memories! Although I did enjoy the Lovesexy Crystal Ball photo book Chris did at the time...

Within a couple of months of Eileen going and Controversy closing, Prince released the NPG magazine for around 5 issues....He can't keep any concept going for too long as we all well know...20,000 magazine lasted for one issue too.

too right ! short guy, short attention span. Tamar or Nona Gaye anyone ??

the Crystal Ball book was fantastic ! very glossy, superb photos, must have cost a lot of money 2 put 2gether. i seem 2 remember it explained the whole black album/lovesexy and camille/prince thing, with the kind of insight and wording that made me at least wonder if there wasn't some paisley park/prince input ?

The net kind of makes fanclubs/zines irrelevant, though.

Aww, man! As weird as it may sound, I kind of wish we were behind in technology just a little/tad bit. In my late teens, early 20s and before mass use by the internet Eileen was my only up to date info source on Prince...Controversey magazine was fantastic and I rang her hotline almost everyday for info. I remember the last message she left about the service ceasing to exist and she sounded genuinely in shock and very saddened.

Eileen if you are reading this, I can't thank you enough and hope you are well. biggrin

i know what you mean and i agree with you. its like doing academic research and the diffrence between primary and secondary source information, print media unlike electronic media helps to aradicate false facts because it helps to create control as well as critical thinking and wonderment in a sense because then you don't get everything at once...if you know what i mean

but forums like the org are useful because it delivers important information quickly in time restricted circumstances

my memory is a bit fuzzy going back to '85-'86, but didn't Chris and Eileen kno each other and were involved in the same Prince based project 2 start with, either 'The Revolution' or 'Controversy' b4 they went in their own direction with the 2 things ?

i remember that Chris and his posse were just as devoted 2 all things Princely, including all sorts of rare stuff they used to sell. It's hard 4 any1, including myself, 2 appreciate just how much time, dedication, love and sweat must go in2 doing what they both used 2 do, and 4 it 2 end on a very sour note, as it did 4 both of them, is a real shame.

Co-sign all of this. During the late 80's and early 90's Controversy really was the only magazine that kept me in touch apart from snippits in magazines. You know the content was up-to-date and (more importantly) true. Thanks Eileen, you were appreciated!

Chris got some bad press, but he did a lot for the Prince community.

Chris was actually the founder of Controversy, not Eileen. They did the first issue together. They split after they realised they wanted the magazine to be different things.

Eileen wanted it to be a pictorial news bulletin/fan club thing, Chris wanted to create two mags with a clean split. One to cover collecting/discography, the other to be more spiritual.

After Chris met with Prince in 88, he develops the first Crystal ball magazine. His love of the spiritual side of things came back briefly when he made The Truth Angel in 97 before the great "purge" of web sites began!

Last I heard, he was still involved with the offical site, doing his carpentry in the day.

Last time I saw him, he was running the Love 4 one another stall in London.
